Wow, i loved the Amstrad CPC!

 

Looked forward every month to Amstrad Action, manually typing in 1 or 2 full pages of code

 

I remember contributing to a Fanzine Magazine called A-OK, i did the games cheat section...god that's a blast from the past.....

 

 

Amstrad Action was an ace magazine... I typed in the code too, learnt alot about programming from my CPC6128. I used to be really into Text Adventures - AA had a section on them, initially done by someone called "The Pilgrim". You could add your name and address for people to write to you when stuck on particular games (how the world was pre-email / web eh?). I got loads of letters about certain games, from all over the world.

 

Bizarrely, quite recently I got a letter at my parents from someone who was trying an old game out and had dug around for assistance.

 

I vaguely remember A-OK. If you did the cheats there, I probably used them.

And there was the 'Balrog' who helped us out with text based adventure games. And the fantastic 'this program does everything in only 10 lines of code' section.

 

For most of it's life AA was a very well written and enjoyable mag. At one time I had almost every issue stashed away along with the quality covertapes

I played it all over Christmas (1979 or 1980), I think.

probably not quite as old but it did still work last time i tried it (cant be bothered finding that many aa's)

 

i can remember that Rayleigh nmx a mate had one basic with about 1 module never got any more as far as i remember and i had a later racer (Rayleigh sensor) that had speedo etc on the crossbar

Didn't AA have a small cartoon character in it's early issues (basically a stick man with large round head) called Toot that used to hide amongst the text and in the margins?

 

Not sure why I remember that....

Never had one but recognise it.

 

The companies who bring these things back must be laughing all the way to the bank. Virtually no development cost and time needed, just get something old manufactured and everyone will buy it because its 'retro'

I used to work with the great Dr Ashens in my PC-World days. I've moved into School IT, he's moved into reviewing old tech online. If you haven't seen it yet look up 'Dr Ashens' on Youtube or go to Oh Ashen, you've done it again

 

He does a lot of reviews for the 'Pop Station' consoles you can get off e-bay. They are basically these old Game N Watch games (yes I had one ) made to look like modern games consoles - PS3/Xbox/PSOne/etc.
