Well, we've had them for a couple of weeks now, so what have you put on there that is 'essential'?

Me, I currently have 3:

 

1. Dolphin Web Browser (free). Much better than the default browser and supports multi-touch, tabs and gestures.

 

2. SmrtGuard (free). Remote back up, tracking, call logs and data wipe, all in a nice package.

 

3. Better Keyboard ($1.99). Does what it says on the tin.

Places Directory (local places of interest)

ConnectBot (SSH client, with port forwards)

androidVNC

beebPlayer (BBC iPlayer)

Process Monitor (close pesky programs that stay open)

Twidroid (Twitter client)

i've had mine for 3wks now have you received a customs bill yet. also did you install the multi touch update i did mine myself yesterday and its so much better for it

Goggles - Photograph things and it'll find em on the net for you.

Shazam - Find the name of a song playing near you.

Tricorder - Various bits of live data from your phone.

ConnectBot - SSH client.

Better Terminal Emulator - Linux terminal

ASTRO - File and process manager

Wifi Analyzer - Is what it says it is.

Remote RDP - Remote Desktop client

RepliGo Reader - PDF Reader

OfficeSuite - Word/Excel/Powerpoint etc... reader

My Train Times Lite - Live train times

Babbler - Facebook client

TwitterRide - Twitter client

Spotify - Spotify client, includes local downloading of songs (only for premium customers though)

eBuddy - MSN/Facebook/GTalk/AIM client

Jabiru - Jabber client

Touchdown - Exchange client (if you use exchange that is).

I got a HTC Hero the other week, and cant seem to install apps, would some kind person point me in the right direction :)

 

Open the Market app and browse them. Or is that what isn't working?

I installed the update manually this morning, couldnt wait any longer for multi touch. Very easy to do, just make sure you have plenty of juice on the battery or its plugged in.
