I have been given some software to install on all the workstaions in our school. The install instructions give examples of install by msiexec with relevant switches.

I once used a peice of software to create a .mst answer file for some other software i had to install ages ago and can't remember how i did it or what it was.

How to i create a .mst answer file? I want to deploy through GPO with a 'advanced software installion that i can point to my answer file? so it installs silently with no user intervention needed.

Any suggestions?

If you want to make MSTs and the program doesnt have a utilitity like the office resource kit then you tend to have to use one of the MSI packers you have to pay for. The free and Lite versions dont tend to have this ability. You can download Admin Studio on a 30 day trial though.

How much is that incidentally?

Whats the licensing with that? i.e. if bought at school etc., could you make mst's with it for external use too? (legal-speak)

There's an application called MaSaI installer that I think does this- we looked into it this year but because we already use Prism Deploy thought we would stick with it and just extend the licenses.

Here's the link:

It isn't bad at all, and is highly configurable. Price is about $240. The download is a 30 day trial, but lets you test out all of the features pretty well from what I remember.

I think Admin studio is about £300 it is meant for software developers to package their apps and redistribute, so yes anything you produce can be passed on assuming licencing etc blah blah

@kingswood:

Yeah - think I've seen that before, never tried it tho :roll:

The kicker is that the school wouldnt see the point in buying it lol same with any repackager really.

@Chris:
