I never knew you could get these! I have an old Elonex IDE based laptop that performs like a very not performing thing this could be the ideal thing to speed it up!. And for £15 an utter bargin!

Not long before SSD's were useable/affordable in consumer or small business applications many sites were looking at these as interim performance solutions. Quite a few of them had a bit too much time on their hands and elected to see how some high performance CF cards stacked up in some fairly serious RAID setups

I've known, but been unable to actually get any in practice - I ordered some adapters from eBay at some point, only to find they wouldn't fit any CF cards I had. These look like they might actually work, so I'll maybe give them a go. Dead handy for fitting small CF cards to otherwise old laptops, installing a PXE boot stack or small Linux install and turning the laptop into a handy thin client.

Oh yes, some cameras still use them - we bought 8GB CF cards for our Canon DSLRs.

 

Why CF and not SD?

 

Because the CF interface standard is actually the PCMCIA/PC-Card, just squished down a bit, and the PC-Card standard is a descendant of the ISA bus standard, so you can pretty much just plug the CF card straight in to the IDE bus and away you go.

Buy any top of the range DSLR camera and it will use CF because the access speed is far superior to SD cards or any other card storage format. Sometimes they'll have SD cards as well, but it takes a lot longer to save an image to these - CF is far from a dead format.

 

Our cashless catering loaders run their OS from CF cards.

Yeh CF Cards to exist I use them for my Sony DSLR although the newer ones are now on Memory Sticks

 

You can also use IBM Microdrives with those adaptors

as dhicks said, CF and IDE are extremely close relations - so you have a wide, relatively fast bus, and need cock-all electronics to convert the two. SD on the other hand is harder to deal with - from memory (my brother is into this and told me all about it once.. had a few beers in me tho) you have a choice of interfaces, but both are narrow and slow, and nothing like IDE or SATA.

 

SD was designed for small form factors like cameras - though I think some of the later canon dslrs use it, my 40d certainly does not.
