Broadband Backup?

Have I mentioned before about the mushroom enviroment I find myself in around here

 

I'm at one of my schools and a BT engineer has turned up to put in 3 extra sdl lines like they've been doing for the past year to up speed from 2MBs to 10MBs.

 

Thing is, the school had this done already before Christmas.

 

I said we must have got a duplicate order but the engineer said - no this is for backup or something!

 

he said he's done 2 other schools yesterday.

 

Anyone got any idea what this is about?

Don't know what it is about, but i do remember someone putting in BT lines last year sometime over here. I thought that CLEO broadband was now Virgin anyway, I con only asume it is a backup line in case the Virgin one fails.

 

We had our 10Mb line upgraded to 100Mb last year by Vrigin engineers through CLEO, so I would have thought that the primarys would have 10Mb provided by Virgin as well.

Yesterday, some CLEO guys came to decommission our radio mast following the installation of our fibre (which has a go-faster stripe!). The thing is, the LUNS guy that configured the kit set up the radio as a backup link.

 

I did point this out to the lovely woman at CLEO so I can only assume that it's right.

I had the guys from luns come round last week to measure up for our fibre install. can't wait till then. And i would suppose they'll be leaving the radio mast in place for backup as we are a host for other schools in the area as we are the only school with direct line of sight to the main antenna.

we had three lines put in the last September, and BT are coming out again next week to put another one in!

ooh sounds interesting for you people in CLEO Land, wish we had that in Yorkshire land

 

When the Internet goes down thank goodness for my ADSL it saved the day today once again, and only the other month they were supposedly making the upstream proxys redundant and super dooper......

 

following the installation of our fibre (which has a go-faster stripe!).

Oh and Ric go-faster stripes are just gimics, I've got them on my copper DSL lines, its the insulation tape to cover the hole where the insulation has worn away on the drop wire Another job for half term to chop it shorter and make a new joint in a nice IP56 box up on the roof I think....

Just got phone call to say BT have cancelled appointment for this week, and will come out another day.

I did ask why we needed an extra line, something to do with us not getting the 10mb connection with three lines they put in, so an extra line is required.

mm - thats got a ring of truth about it as school currently only getting 5MBS instead of 10 (but I'd like 2 x 5 rahter than 1x10
