Oh come on people. Do we really want this site to become *just* technical stuff? It is quite simple - if you don't like a post, don't read it or comment on it! If people who didn't like such posts just ignored them, then there would be less of this nonsense going on.

Yes, it is a professional site, but at the same time - we're all human! We all need to unwind sometimes!

If this site was strictly professional there wouldn't be a 'Behind the Red Door' forum as that in itself is usually a place to have a nice venting session about boss/company/users.

I'd agree that the technical forums are the professional side but the general forums are more lighthearted and should be viewed that way.

If you go completely professional, you lose the community spirit then start charging for tech help like experts-exchange.

I'd wager alot of Edugeek's success was due to being able to relate/communicate with like minded individuals, not the consumate professional.

hahaha!! general chat should be for general chat.

and technical forums for technical issues - this is well stated on the toolbar at the top.

why is there any confusion over that?

There isn't any confusion - but surely inane chat is better off on facebook or any other site intended for that... whereas this forum is intended for IT professionals working in education and should in my opinion be mostly technical, not a cross between the school playground and BETT! Like others, I am getting very bored of all this now...

well as much as I apprecaite I cant please everyone - the majority did enjoy my Frisky Friday thread- it was light hearted and a bit of fun on a Friday. I'd like to think I put a smile on at least someones face :)

I don't know how you can possibly say that 'most' people enjoyed your thread. Obviously the people posting to it were, in the main, people who enjoyed it but you have NO idea how many people were avoiding it or even complaining by reporting it or pming to mods and admins.

Remember how many people there are on Edugeek. There is a minority who enjoy pointless innuendo and complete nonsensical arguments, but I think you will find that there are many more who do not. I personally like the 'General Chat' forum but as has been said, this is not Facebook. Previously we seem to have been able to have a light conversation about cars, or whatever, with humour and banter thrown in, that has stayed on topic, had little sleaziness and not upset anyone with nasty pointed remarks or spiteful comments.

I would very much like to get back to that.

As someone who represents a company, Danielle, you might like to remember all the other edugeeks out there who have extensive buying power, but who don't appreciate this sort of thing

I haven't said I wasn't pleased by it, just the context and manner it all got out of hand. I thought it was light hearted and no ill intentions were meant, and your right, many people smiled about it, which is good, but were constantly hammered about being a professional site, and it needs to be kept along those lines.

I just thought it all got out of hand, as many a thread previously have, and not very professional.

I do enjoy the fact that your thread was probably the quickest and most viewed thread in such a short time on EduGeek, over 2000 views and 14 pages of replies in less than two hours ;)

Talk about your expectations, what you want to gain, ask technical questions, find out what makes us "geeks" tick and the rest, not promote your indepth feelings at the moment.

My opinion, none of it really matters, as it is my opinion after all, only valid to myself.

Whilst at the same time, there are plenty of edugeeks out there who *do* appreciate such things. So what's your point? It seems that your only argument is that you didn't like it. So why did you not just ignore it? The BBC News site has articles about all sorts on it, but it also has a sports section - something I don't consider to be at all news worthy. I don't go reading all the articles and then complain to the BBC about it...

No, you misunderstand me - what I meant was that just because the relatively few people reading the thread liked it, doesn't mean that one can presume that everyone did and therefore that is the way to behave - as a company hoping to sell into this market.

Whilst I do see that if you don't like something, you don't have to read it, where exactly does that end? Extreme porn and violence is OK because you don't have to look at it? (yes, I know, an extreme example but you get my point)

I think that this is a cracking site and I would hate to see it go downhill - and IMHO the sort of thing that has been happening lately is not doing edugeek any favours

Ladies of the night will beg to differ.

:getmecoat:

Oh look, there's one now - a pointless, irrelevant and 'ohh aren't I naughty - talking about sex' remark.

How old are you lot? 10?

Do you not understand what those sort of posts do? They try to make the conversation less like a funeral march - stomping towards the inevitable grave.

Lightening the mood is not a bad thing you know...

I think your taking this far to seriously. I know how many reported it and how many people are approximately on here,

And I am not hoping to sell into this market as I am not a sponsor.

There isnt a "search" button for IT Guys on facebook, so if I want to talk to people about IT and technology as well as put some light hearted humour in there I would google forums like this. and here I am :)

It really is quite a sad state of affairs if people are unable to take general non IT related talk and find issue with it.

As quite rightly stated, you do not have to view the general forums or participate in them.

Whilst we are at it, I don't like personally people that would seek to turn Edugeek into a 'no frills, get your fixes here' forum. Should I lobby to get them removed?

A) I didn't say that

B) You are entirely free to state your opinion about Edugeek, of course

*Danielle, how is asking if people feel frisky anything to do with wanting to speak to IT people?

I have never lobbied to get anyone removed and would not do so. I merely think that we are starting to travel down a road that is not the right one, and stating my opinion.

Several threads lately have got really nasty - is this really where you want to go?

Posted

Ahh but your opinion may not be that of the collective. Everyone here is free to voice concerns but clearly there are people who quite enjoy the 'lighter' side to Edugeek.

I'd say the appeal for me is that like minded individuals are able to freely express ideas and share stories (IT related and general) in a setting where mostly people can relate and impart wisdom.

For instance, there was a thread not too long ago about buying houses, lots of good information was shared that may not have been given on other forums.

Edugeek is more than just a site for IT related help, it's a community that looks after the needs of participants, IT related or not.

Please, no. It'll be like Experts Exchange

Guys, we all know we're not against a bit of fun, but we're still a professional forum, and should be treated as such.

Do you really a thread about how frisky you were feeling on a friday would have lasted long on the TES, RM or Capita forums? And have you seen our traffic rankings compared to those?

Nobodies saying lock out the fun side and make it all about work, but a bit of common sense when posting is all that anyone should have to ask for.

Personally I'm getting a little tired with the latest round of in-fighting ad regime bashing - could we all please move back to what made this forum so great in the first place....a friendly, knowledge filled community (with a slight undercurrent of teacher bashing :D )

Edugeek is technical forum, but is also a community, with any community shouldn't there be a social side?

The schooI work at is also a community which too has it's social side. I don't know about others on edugeek, but here at work we don't spend all day talking about work!

Obviously we are paid to work, but I consider (some) staff as friends. We socialize, we talk at work about things other than work and we have a laugh.

Otherwise life is very dull.

No one is saying that there shouldnt be a fun side to the forums and yet those of you defending this stuff seem to be convinced that is what the unappreciative are saying.
