Spring Clean

Right - its nearly spring and I want to clean up Edugeek

 

(At BETT there were some pretty big boys and girls (and I'm not talking size here!) coming over to stand and wanting to talk to Mr Edugeek and I think we could do with a bit of a re-vamp around here )

 

Anyone else up for this?

 

Now I know only ZH can actually do most of the work and he's a little bit busy at the moment but I thought if we got together some ideas on what could make the site look/work better then he could code them up when he's back with us

 

Good idea/bad idea?

Knowing DB and ZH ... they have more stuff hidden away than you can imagine. Unless you are Geoff ... in which case it is just stuff he has not indexed on google yet.

 

It will get a revamp ... probably over the next year when DB and ZH have more time ... so I will vote yes, but am happy that it is in capable hands anyway.

It does depend on what you mean by "Spring Clean"?

 

ZH does a outstanding job on keeping EduGeek online, both backend and frontend he is always messing with her to make sure it is better for all members, one thing i do know is alot of things will be happening over the coming year with EduGeek and alot of new things will appear on the scene.

 

So with regards to the site itself no i dont think it does need a spring clean, new features will be coming out in the coming future and when the community needs to be told they will... from a software point of view VB v4 has just been released and i know already ZH is looking it to make EduGeek better!

On the other hand, if you mean a "spring clean" with regards to community rules/advice with posting etc then yes i do agree, and something is already being done about it at the moment discussion is in place with how things are going at the moment, with more clear posting rules etc, mod advice for us so that we are also on the same level as this has been brought up a few times.. and also a revised set of forum rules will be discussed with the whole community to make EduGeek better... (notice how i say discussed with everyone, and not we tell you.. as that is something that is not going to happen as it is wrong)

Bloomin heck - is everyone on touchy pills!

 

My main prompt for this was when us WinMo people were trying to get on the site and post during the evenings at BETT - we couldn't find a post button amongst all the other stuff that came up.

 

(Of course the Apple FanBoys were fine!)

 

And then with all the discussions about what is Edugeek it made me look at the site from a new visitors point of view and I thought we could do with a lick of paint here and there

 

So chill people!

 

But i can imagine all the Edugeeks sitting in their bedroom/computer/living rooms/server rooms thinking - what do you mean it needs a clean!

I get what you mean though... A refresh of the colours would be nice actually, and possibly a button to nominate threads for archiving to the wiki.

I think rather than using the generic term spring clean, asking members what they like and don't like about the site is a better idea. Using this information more constructive decisions can be made.

 

Changing the appearance has its pros and cons for example. Change it too much and people don't like change, but change it a little and include new features... the results can most certainly be rewarding.

@vikpaw I would edit my post to remove the bit about the troll smilie (though see your PM) but another improvement would be the use of 'edit' on the iPhone template.

The main suggestion I have is there's too many forums! It took me ages to find the one for job vacancies the other day when I had one to post up - almost gave up.

@vikpaw looks like it vanished completely. Another to remember, don't use iPhone template to send PMs. Will try and replicate and report as fault later. PM will have to wait.

The iPhone template is only really useful for viewing threads. Replying to posts or sending PM's is too much hassle.

My pills are probably kicking in, but after some recent threads i'd be tempted to get rid of general chat and behind the red door.

 

Move the majority of non edu-it discussion to a facebook group or other area which is separate, so the main site can focus on the main issues. If people are bored and just want to hang around and chat go to Edu-Chat or whatever. If they need help or are providing it with educational it issues, then stay on main site.

 

That would certainly clean the air up a bit.

I can see your point and part of me agrees. However, part of the edugeek community spirit is that we have got know each other outside the technical questions and it would be a shame to lose that because a few of of our many thousands can't behave themselves.

 

The behaviour problems are a symptom of the size of the community now and is demonstrated by Dos_Box having to go full time to manage it. I can see a time when we have employed Mods. The voluntary ones do a fantastic job, but they have home families and jobs to cope with too.

I like the , but do wonder if he is really all that helpful, does he inflame things by his very use? He does break up posts terribly if you are trying to read them.

 

Signatures; can we clean them up a bit? More like the old 4 lines and nothing that moves! Some threads have more sig lenth than post. Yep CPLTD fella, I'm looking at you as a prime example!

 

The foum index page isn't too user freindly. "Edugeek projects" looks fine, but when you add the sponsor information to the "Technical Forums" index, it becomes disjointed. Truth be told, I seldom look at it as I use "New Posts" almost exclusivly.

I would like to see a couple of lines of explanation on the home page - without someone having to click on 'about us' - which is completely out of date, by the way.

I agree about the sigs (edutech??!) - too big and too many lines in some cases.

Spring cleaning should definitely apply to rules etc - is there any way that when someone registers their email addy, an automatic email goes out with the rules of the forums?

The jobs pages are very hard to find - I wouldn't look under 'regional forums' if I was looking for a job. How about in General forums subdivided into countries?

I think we could probably do with a few more mods and possibly admins - the job has mushroomed recently and it is hard to keep up and keep sane

not too sure whats wrong with my sig chap , as a company representative its important for our sig to show contact details and a description of what we do, also if there are any particular offers.
