Problem is, you could never produce them commercially, as there's all sorts of approvals and health and safety type stuff for anything containing electrical items, and I doubt a fibreboard table from Ikea meets any of them. Could warrent further investigation thou. . . . .

I'm pretty sure if nothing else we could find out what materials are actually allowed and then go a little crazy with the old power tools... This kind of thing would blow the kids minds at school... Heck I could probably find a local sponsor to cover the costs too... Now my only problem is how to stop my Grandfather and Dad sticking their oars in and laughing like schoolboys all over again.. Oooh the possibilities Oh and the bit about the screws working themselves loose... If you get a couple of corner brackets and screw them upside down ('L' like) at the right height on the inside/opposite legs (ie: "back" of the table) they could support the weight and stop the screws taking the overburden caused by leverage.

dhicks Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 that foam stuff that expands That-foam-stuff-that-expands costs at least as much per can as the whole table, comes out as sticky goop that keeps on expanding and oozes (I think) ueraic acid all over the place. As pointed out by Batman, the table top is hollow - the inside looks like it's made from little more than corrugated cardboard. Ikea have them dotted around its store in a pick-one-up-as-you're-passing sort of way, they're so light. You would need something a bit more solid for a proper table - MDF for the top, probably, with strips of pine or similar making up the legs, assuming you're planning to paint the whole thing a uniform colour to hide the raw materials. It probably wouldn't cost much more than £30 per table for materials, although you would need some decent tools to finish the job properly - a circular saw or angle grinder to cut a hole in the centre of the table top, and a router to make a nice neat recess (a rabbet) to slot the screen in properly. Computer hardware wouldn't be a problem - one of those dead small Acers fitted on the back of the LCD screen should work nicely. I have one that's not getting much use at the moment, you could maybe test with that. The main problems I can think of: - LCD screens aren't great for putting cups of coffee on. You'd need a chunk of perspex or similar screwed on top of the table. This will rather spoil the touch-sensativity part of the LCD, though. - What software, exaclty, are you planning to run on this device, and what operating system? Is Windows 7 is multi-touch capable? Is there a developers kit / API available for free to develope Windows multi-touch applications with? Or is there a matching multi-touch version of Linux? - If the touch-screen bit doesn't work behind a chunk of perspex, how do you plan to make the screen touch-sensative, or multi-touch capable? -- David Hicks
