CESIL Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Just received an email from our LEA saying: Important Information Due to the severe weather conditions over the last couple of weeks some essential maintenance is required on the server (webspace01.xxxx.gov.uk) which holds your webspace. This maintenance work will be carried out between 20.00 and 21.00 on Thursday 21st January 2010. During this period your webpages will not be accessible for viewing, but you will still be able to update them using your FTP packages. We apologise for the short notice, but with the uncertainty of the weather conditions, this work must be completed as soon as possible, so that your webspace is not compromised in this way in the future. Regards I am now intrigued as to what the bad weather did to the server?? Any ideas?
LosOjos Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Didn't you know council servers are tucked away at the back of one of the directors gardens in a shed? They just need to waterproof it with a bit of tarpaulin and your server will be fine!
localzuk Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 My guess is that the servers didn't serve well during the high demand period caused by the weather, so the maintenance is being done to make the servers perform better for the next such event.

localzuk Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Perhaps. But they say that the weather caused a problem with the server. This is what "due to" means. It did, indirectly (Yes, I'm a spoil sport).

tmcd35 Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I recon the server dropped in to hibernation when the room temperture dropped below 2C. Don't blame it, I do exactly the same thing

I agree, because of the weather, I am now redesigning the schools website so if such an event happens again, we will be able to display vital information better. also looking at the performance as well... the word proactive comes to mind
