I am trying to assign all stduents on moodle to the role of "student" I thought doing this as a bulk upload would keep it simple and use the colum heading of "role" however when i try and upload it it says "role" is not a valid field name

Thanks

When you do a bulk upload and enroll them on to a course they take the default role anyway, which is Student.

That being said, "role"should work fine. Try and setup the courses at the same time with the upload, will save loads of time later.

Is this for a particular course or for the front page on Moodle? As I understand it, a student on one course can still be a teacher on another, and even an admin on another. If you want your students to be students site wide, surely that would enrol them on every course - even the ones the subjects they don't actually take.

Our enrollment is based on students manually clicking a course to enroll, using enrollment keys.

That's correct about them being Students on one and Teachers on another.

When you setup the CSV you have the headings of course and role so just set the course to the course you want them to be in and role to student or teacher.

By doing a bulk upload with no course defined it won't enrol them on every course it will just make them users and then you can manually assign roles in a course. It will work fine this way, it will just take longer.

If you want to enrol users into a specific course with a specific role (eg, you want students to be "teachers " on one course, then add the fieldnames course1 and role1 .

For the course, put the course shortname and for the role, put the shortname of the role - which is student or teacher.

(in the old fashioned way -which still works , you can use the fieldname type1 for the role of that course whereby student = 1 and editing teacher =2)
