Disposing of backup tapes

How does everybody dispose of their backup tapes when they are retired?

Break them up into pieces. Nothing more technical than that needed.

We use a company called ShredIT for tapes, hard drives and paper waste.

Burn Them!

 

It is the safest way to make sure any sensitive data is removed.

 

I have taken tapes on to the local City Council Incinerator in the past.

Very little cost, and you can watch them put them into the fire.

 

Not very environmentally friendly I know, but at least the data is destroyed.

In the science-department they have a HUGE elektromagnet (100W, don't know how many Tesla's). I use that to erase the tapes, then throw them in the garbage.
