Music dept throwing out an old Peavey Combo as it was wrecked. Aha! A few minutes with a soldering iron and some cable and it fits nicely under my desk!!

 

Connected to my workstation which has the usual external drive for storing "Ahem, ........... 8GB of `work` files."

 

Feet up while I do some routine stuff.

Personally I'm just under the 2TB mark with my home raid media server but I am responsible for a much wealthier friends raid setup after I got fed up with him coming to me for drive recovery every time he lost a disc.. He was also running out of drive letters fast.

 

He currently stands at 11.2TB In 4 arrays in 4 machines. He's a collection nut and he's trying to assemble complete sets of every scifi, cartoon or drama show since 1980. He's a strange chap but ina good way and if your ever bored a trip to his place with a removable hard drive and your sorted for months

there's only ~700Gb used at the moment and it's mostly isos, videos, music, backups from other machines and recordings from the mythtv box.

 

The drives were payment in kind for some work I did. I settled on 3TB because of the rate my need for storage has increased - it normally doubles every two years.

I'm up to just over 1TB at home when I have them all in the machine, no RAID or anything (thats to come in my new rig next year, Dreaming of a new HP Proliant but I think the noise and power requirements may cause some household issues) but I will do something magical next year with RAID etc

there's a few micro-atx boards that have PCI-X slots and take laptop processors.

 

if you based your fileserver on this http://mashie.org/casemods/udat1.html , but swapped the itx board for the micro-atx?

If i bring another PC into the house, I may find myself homeless, I am up to 15 machines now, thats 2 laptops, 2 cubes, 1 book PC, 1 Server spec PC and the rest normal workstations, so I need to reduce them really.... But thanks for the pointers, If I dare in the future bring another in (after I have got rid of some) then I think it will be a Pentium M type Micro ATX type thing, and maybe hide it in the loft....

Well due to a severe lack of space I'm going to have to look at building some sort of network storage device. So its time to start doing some research. Anyway it will give me something to do on those long lonley winters nights.
