Folder re-direction borked!!!

Story so far.......

 

2k and 2003 Servers, 2k and XP(2) clients. Office2k runs locally.

 

Folder re-direction etc worked perfectly......then......

for no apparent reason pupils couldn`t save new Word or Excel documents..... "Drive C: not available etc"

 

However, if they loaded an existing Word document they could alter it and save without problem!!

 

Have spent ages trying to solve this but googling only suggests this is a problem with update KB885250 and removing this didn`t seem to make much difference. As it`s an essential update its automatically re-installed anyway and the permanent fix is apparently KB895900 which would involve a paid support call to MS and doesn`t seem to address the problem we have.

 

I removed the Folder redirection from the GPO and then re-installed it. Some pupils can now save as it opens up their user area on the server and they can navigate to My Docs but most cannot even access their old work now as their My Docs is "not accessable.....see administrator"

 

Any idea what is going on????!!!! Definately seems to be linked to some MSupdate as I had made no changes to setup. Bit of a pain if they cannot save or access their work and the staff are screaming about it

Anything in the event log on either the server or the client(s)?

It may be worth checking the settings tab in the redirection policy. Make sure that this isn't set to inadvertantly lock the little darlings out.

 

Also check that you haven't borked the folder permissions on the server/share.

We get that sometimes on clients. If they press it about 3 times they are able to select another folder usually. Strange really as I ahve the paths set correctly in the default profile.

Same (as Chris) here. Not fixed it yet but not major issue as can get around it

regarding you Office 2k install... Is it a vanilla "off-the-cd" install?

 

I/we asume that you have the C drive hidden and unaccessible (tho the system can obviously use it regardless lol) in the GP settings right?

 

Your best bet is to make a administrative install point and use that to install - making sure users can access that directory.

 

You also need to use the office 2k adm's to make the default dir to save in, as the home dir that you have mapped when a user logs on (H: usually). I find this works best for 2k. Office XP and above seem more forgiving.

 

I also used the Office 2k resource kit to customise things a bit - i.e. like prepopulating saving to H: drive in the install, layout setttings, etc.

 

Its takes a little time but soo worth it in the end - installing is a doddle then

This has worked perfectly well for over 12 months so I don`t know what caused the wobble. Works with some users but not the majority. Office is the usual admin install on server.

 

I too suspected it was to do with user rights/permissions so have run a restore from an old tape dating from when it was working (user areas and system state). Now seems ok but I would like to know what caused it. Will add the intervening MS updates one by one and see what effect that has.

Has anyone changed any access rights at all recently - since it was working fine?

 

Is the C drive hidden by GP? was it before the error occured?

 

It could well be a update - we all know how sometimes they mess something up lol
