Small form factor PCs

Not sure of the best location for this one - but thought here may be best...

 

I've been sent a link for some very small form factor PCs that are also apparently also very Eco-Friendly...

 

Never heard of the company before and with my previous experience of similar sized PCs (I inherited some to support from an unknown manufacturer at a new site when I moved into my current job and they are dire)

 

Soooo, has anybody have any experience with VeryPC? BroadLeaf BL32-B-E53 « GreenPC « Business « VeryPC

 

Good? Bad? Indifferent? What is their support like? Build quality?

 

Basically I'm just lookiing for feedback from anyone that has experience of them.

Have you seen the new Dell Optiplex 780 USFF? It's got very similar dimensions to the PC you linked to - not sure on how eco-friendly it is though!

I have no experience with that certain pc.

 

But they use 38w an hour where as the eee-box from asus use 20w.

With these systems, they are green till you add in the monitor electric usage. which is where many school fail at going green.

I like the ones from stone and hp but they do have problems when they get old the fans have to work hard to keep them cool and the fans fail and have to be replaced and the heat can reduce the life of the hard drives.

We've bought 200+ PC's and 2 Servers from VeryPC and been extremely impressed.

 

Of the 200+ PC's to re-do our suites we've had no DOA's and they come with a 5 year warranty and there is a next business day swap out which is extremely reliable.

 

We've also bought a couple of the Broadleaf machines and have been impressed with them.

I am a fan of the HP DC7900 USDT. They look particularly smart mounted on the back of the HP Workstation Stands with the monitor on the front.

 

Approximately 100 onsite and no problems so far

RM's EcoQuiet PCs run at about 35W, too - they are full-sized though, so no good if wanted these for the SFF case.

 

At the latest Tech Seminars, RM were waving round their mini PCs (can't remember the proper name) which Vesa-mount onto the backs of monitors which is pretty neat.

I knew the company sounded familiar I was looking at their Green Hive machine to go with a new ncomputing cluster.

If your specifically looking at max energy efficiency then VeryPC have some solutions for things like powering down monitors and machines when no-one is infront of the PC using webcams and face recognition etc etc.

 

We havent gone as far as that but they do the technology if you were interested.

I'm suitably impressed with our Acer N260Gs we got from Acer outlet:

These are just under £350 at the moment, complete with widescreen monitor and Windows XP Pro.

 

For switching the monitor off when the PC is powered off, we use cheap E-On PowerDown devices from eBay, £10 each:

Some times green is not always more cost effective, sometimes it's not about the money.

From a "green" point of view, probably longer - I don't know how much energy it takes to manufacture one of those PowerDowns, but it's probably a fair bit. eBay probably isn't the cheapest way to buy them, though - there must be somewhere to buy them bulk for a bit cheaper.

The Greenest solution would be to switch the units off at the wall outlet. But that can create other issues by it'self.

Hate these things with their external power supplies, I have some Lenovo A58 which are just untidy.

The EnergyStar desktop list which you can download from their site shows that the VeryPCs in lab conditions are the most energy efficient PCs in idle, under load over total estimated consumption. What VeryPC do though is to reduce the impact on people and the environment of building PCs, using them and then disposing of them. No other manufacturer can come close to this. The VeryPC range is the only Energy Savings Trust recommended PC too. In education the lack pof toxins like BFRs, PVCs and Halogens can only be a good thing too, no?
