usb extentions, whats limit

We all know that 5 m is limit on usb, so we have used usb boosters a few times to go over this.

Does any one know if you can connect 2 or 3 together to go even further.

i would have thought so. i mean its the same signal coming out the end and a booster is designed to send it further..

I am going to disagree with the above 5m is the limit for USB, boosters or no boosters. If you need to go further use USB to Ethernet > Ethernet to USB adapters to extend upto 100m.

Hightower on these very forums had a problem with USB over 5m, but after he used ethernet to extend the USB cable, the whiteboard he was trying to fix worked correctly.

I should have said depends whats being transmitted over USB. however i have just found this:

I believe a test is needed...

So according to that it's 22.86m approx. There's absolutely no chance in my opinion that would work.

Using ACTIVE boosters (i mean the ones you have to put an AA battery in) i have gone about 60m with USB before, unpowered extensions will go up to 10 maybe 15 depending on what you put at the end - powered devices (printers etc) that have a seperate power supply are better at the end of a long run than a usb powered device.

In 2 rooms, I'm using two active extenders (powered through USB voltage) with a regular 5m USB at the end, plugging into the smartboard - 15m. Never had a problem. Specs on the extenders say you can have three, and based on my experience I would happily add another if it required it.

 

In another room I have USB-Cat5 extenders using a 20m run of cable that gives regular trouble.
