Automated Startup / Shutdown

Morning.

 

We use Ranger Remote Control to boot the PCs but we have ran out of licences and pick and choose which PCs we need to startup automatically and which need to be powered on manually.

 

We also use a script generated by lanview which we editted to shutdown the systems.

 

So due to this we're looking for something new for autmated startup and shutdown of the PCs and i was wondering what you all use.

We use a WOL script, and PSshutdown script that runs on the server, as a scheduled task.

 

Wake on lan script runs at about 8.20am and shutdown script runs at around 4.30pm, and again about 9.00pm if any kids are doing work late.

 

Simple!

You couldn't show me this WOL script, could you? I can't find one.

 

We currently have the Ranger startup scheduled for 7.30 so that they're up and running for 8am. They currently shut down at 8 after i accidently had it set for 6, in the middle of a parents evening... ooops!

I downloaded a WOL exe from Gammadyne's Free DOS Utilities

 

Put the wol.exe file and script saved as a .bat file into a folder, and the script should run fine. You just the MAC addresses of the machines you wish to startup.

No I exported from DHCP the computers I wanted to WOL and imported into Excel.

 

You can then add wol.exe as a row.

I Have used this script to start up the computers but it is not working on all of the computers on the network. We have got some with Asus motherboards with a Atheros l2 Lan card and some computers have got Nvidia lan cards. The Nvidia lan cards work but the Asus do not work. Has anyone had this problem before?

We use Browse Control (made by Codeworks) to do this.

 

At present out of our 292 computers....200 of them shut down at 19:00...and boot up at 07:00

 

Works really well. This software does a lot more too

Browse control, surf lock and vision 6 were produced by genevalogic which the uk importer is codeworks.

 

However this range of software is now owned by netop.

Same here,

 

Shutdown runs at about half 5

 

Wake up is for classrooms only (everyone else has to urn on their own PCs) and runs at 8am.

Double check the settings of the card in device manager, and in the BIOS, that WOL is enabled.

 

You might need to tweak the settings to get it to work. Most new boards should have WOL on as standard.

AFAIK this isn't driver related, it's a BIOS setting.

 

Having said that I have experienced an odd machine that won't WOL even though the BIOS settings are correct (duplicated using HP's BIOS tools and manually checked vs. and identical PC next to it).

I don't know if anyone is interested I harvested my list of MAC addresses using either Angry IP Scanner or fast resolver. I then used the following Excel statement to remote the dashes.

 

=CONCATENATE("wol ",REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(B36,3,1,""),5,1,""),7,1,""),9,1,""),11,1,""))

 

In this case the MAC copied from Fast Resolver was in cell B32. I prefer to use a formula instead of find and replace because it updates automaticaly if I change a MAC address.

Some drivers do not let you do WOL so it might be to do with drivers as well as BIOS!

It can be, especially on some Intel chipsets. There is an advanced flag in the driver that controls how the network card behaves after a shutdown.

I've got it to work. There was a power managment option on the adaptor.
