shutdown a locked machine

I got this in my event log from a failled shutdown last night:

The machine is locked and can not be shut down without the force option.

 

Is there any way to get it to shut down a locked PC?

the /f that EduTech is talking about is for the shutdown command from windows.

Hmm.. Powdarrmonkey - any comment? I see that previous post was from 2008.. Has /f been implemented yet?

It's implemented in 1.5, where it's a new group policy option (so you can arrange inheritance nicely). I just have to finish off second chancing and do some testing and it will be ready.

Is it worth me installing the current version of Shutdownertron or should I wait for 1.5? I have XP clients but would like the force shutdown option?

Deploying the upgrade is a piece of cake, I'd put it on now and get the scheduling sorted (because people will be your biggest enemy there) and then upgrade later.

Create yaself a batch file containing the following:

 

shutdown -s -f -t 00 -m \\'NETBIOS NAME OF PC' (e.g. \\wxpsle01)

 

I use a batch file with a seperate line for each of my ICT Suite PC's! Very handy, and quick way of shutting down machines @ end of day etc... regardless of their state!!

What I do is implement a script which I knocked together which pings for a domain controller. If it can find the domain controller, it will shut the PC down (force it to shut down) and if it can't - it won't!! (good for when Teachers are using their laptops at home standalone!). I add this via scheduled task in GPP's. Let me know if you wan't a copy.

First of all, awesome work dude.... Not sure if many have thanked you for your work, but thank you.

 

With Windows 7 becoming the norm within my educational facility, the requirements for upgrading to 1.5 or alternative methods are becoming more important.

 

I prefer the GPO method as it allows for easier management of the automated shutdown.

 

Are you able to advise when a/the new version will be released?

Having a similar problem where the shutdown holds on a blue screen (after the login box disappears) when the shutdown command is executed while the PC is in standby or screensaver mode (seemingly). It will commence only when the machines physical mouse is moved (or keyboard tapped etc).

 

For 1.5 can you possibly include an option to fully wake the PC before executing the shutdown command. Would be beneficial and much appreciated.

 

Also waiting for the extra long anticipated 1.5. Look forward to it. Shutdownertron has been beneficial to our network.

Hi All,

 

Have deployed Shutdownertron recently - have to say it is brilliant. Love how it is so easy to deploy and manage centrally from a GPO.

 

However - we have our teacher machines lock automatically after a certain amount of inactivity - which means that when Shutdownertron tries to shut them down - it can't - as it doesn't pass the force command on.

 

The teacher machines really were our target audience for shutdownertron - they are the main culprits for leaving machines on! Is there any news on a new version? Or is there anything else out there that is as easy to use and manageable centrally?

 

Previously we used a script, run as a scheduled task from one of the servers, however it is becoming very difficult to manage with 500 odd computers on the network - each requiring a separate entry in the script. Have also tried TaskForce CO2 - however this still requires a lot of management and is a pain having to install the clients from the console. Didn't think there were that many improvements from PowerOut either, except for reporting which we don't need.

Is there any scope to impement ths forcing shut down? I'd like to offer users an over ride. then 30 minutes later shut the computer down - regardless of if it's locked or not!
