Hey round2IT. Where are you based, are you on SWGFL? As they are still experiencing the wrath of a DDOS attack! "System Status - South West Grid for Learning Web Access Issue: We are continuing to experience unexpected behaviour within the core SWGfL network that results in intermittent access to the Internet. Our engineering teams are treating this with the highest priority and are applying all appropriate supplier escalations to diagnose and fix the fault as quickly as possible. Update: Our engineering teams have identified the cause as an external targetted & distributed denial of service attack from approximately 40,000 random Internet hosts. With the guidance of our hardware suppliers, we have carried out further actions this morning that mitigate the risk of further interruptions in service. The security of the network has remained unaffected throughout." ....this could be causing said issues?? GMan

Weebly - Create a free website and a free blog Set up a class, add pupils, give them their logon details...and away they go!

Fine! Pull the plug on SWGFL then, and go manage your own firewalls, filtering, proxy's, email, ISP etc... et al.....blah! Then see if your end-users are any less p****d when there's downtime!........just saying!
-
Well....ya can just tell them where the problem lies, and that it's out of your hands, and you'll inform them when it's fixed! Then they can put their overpaid-so called teaching skills into action, get creative, and TEACH!....nuff said! ....or just get on with lunch!
-
Come on guys....we all work in IT Support do we not! And we all know what it's like to have end-users on ya back in the midst of a major problem....right!! Give SWGFL a break! It will be fixed when it is fixed (something we'd all like to say to those bugging us during downtime!). Chill the F out guys!!

Hey Guys n Gals Give MK-2 a break will ya's! He (going by the avatar) is fully entitled to his opinion, as are all of you! Until we are advised by whomever decides what was the cause, we aint gonna know! Perhaps the only person who can tell us exactly what happened, was one of the unfortunates that perished in such a tragic, and possibly avoidable accident.... If I can be frank, the Wifey & I regularly drive that stretch of the M5 visiting friends/Family in Nottingham, and bear witness to some quite horrendous acts of madness by some folk, men, women, old folk, Company Reps, van drivers, lorry drivers....you name it....all shapes and sizes.....absolute MUPPETS some of them!!. IMHO it was/is just a matter of time before one (or more) of those mindless, inconsiderate Mo-Fo's took others with them to an early grave!! Harsh I know, and criticize/slag me off if you will, but just my observation & opinion!! Further musings..... You wouldn't give an 8 year-old an AK-47, so why give a 17 year-old a 3-series Beamer after passing his/her test 1st time driving a 1.2 fiesta/focus, and expect them to be the safest driver on the planet???

SWGfL and free texting for parents
garoc replied to witch's topic in South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL)
Yup...seems the 'Basic' service is indeed FREE to setup and 'Rent', but you must purchase message bundles (which must be used in 12 mnths), which work out at a flat rate of 4.2p per messege sent... Hope this helps....ciao 4 now :0) -
SWGfL and free texting for parents
garoc replied to witch's topic in South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL)
hi witch t'only thing I can find is: South West Grid for Learning Trust - Ja.net txt An optional service from SWGFL. Which, although it mentions that the basic 'one way' service is FREE to set up, this is NOT a free service. I think maybe the woman from BECTA has misunderstood thangs! UPDATE: ...hold the phone! On further investigation, it does mention on the SWGFL flyer (http://www.swgfl.org.uk/getattachment/a62a32b8-82d8-42e7-8906-a4e612f4ee01/txt_guide.aspx) that the basic service is FREE! Just trying to find out what exactly the basic service includes.... -

We use an (updated) laminated Class list, that is filled in at each Reg period by Class Teacher/Supply Teacher at the same time as they take the register in SIMS. Our SIMS is installed centrally on the Server, and ultimately I'd like to put in a wireless network, and then designate one of the Teachers to grab their laptop in the event of a fire and take it out with them. All Class registers can then be accessed from that one machine. Tho, as mentioned, if the Server room was engulfed in flames, this might prove useless, so a regularly updated paper based system must be the answer!?!

Sims.net - Reporting on Achievement and Behaviour
garoc replied to Iain.Faulkner's topic in MIS Systems
Iain Ya should find reports you are looking for under: Reports/Run Report/Focus/Student/Achievement* and Behaviour* ....and set filters to house/college etc... where necessary. If not, then give your SIMS support team a call and ask them where/how etc... -
How about housing the PC's in security cages: Universal Tower Computer Security Cages - INCO Computer & AV Security ...initially a costly solution, but could save £'s in the long-run!

...oooh, and one other thing....GO PATRIOTS!

This is a fantastic idea, particularly as many Primary Schools can ill-afford, let alone realise the need for regular, and timely, efficient/experienced ICT support! I currently work part time @ a small Primary as Asst' ICT Coordinator/TA/ICT Tech (lucky them!), having gained a number of years experience in various roles in the industry. Most recently as Mobile Schools ICT Support for our LEA, having as many as 18 primaries under my wing at one stage, each holding various level of SLA (i.e. Bronze, Silver, Gold). I can therefore sympathise with Primaries on the need for a good level of ICT Support, as they quite often not only miss out on reliable/experienced support, but also new and emerging technologies, finding themselves way behind the times! Such a relationship should benefit all parties, providing you are able to scribe a solid, agreeable SLA agreement that suits all! You could also include, should security policies/set up & maintenance costs allow, some form of remote support inc. a Helpdesk feature. I use Spiceworks onsite here (not sure if you can set it up to use multiple remote sites!?!), which has a great helpdesk module, and offers complete inventory managment, reports, and remote connection to clients etc... Anyhoot, that's my twopenneth worth, better get back to work, some little mite has just killed the suite printer!! ciao 4 now
