cookie_monster Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I'm looking for a Movie Maker replacement and i'm wondering if anyone has found anything that is free or cheap that is comparable to i-movie I'm going to take a look at AVS Video Editor, any better suggestions. AVS Video Editor: perfect for home video editing. Edit video easily!

AVS Video Editor: perfect for home video editing. Edit video easily! Its not cheap, but i bought sony vegas for the media studies suite. Its rock solid and stopped the teachers nearly have a breakdown trying to use movie maker. We found movie maker mainly has problems with MPEG2 videos, (codec related)

( the software not the other thing its a video version of acid. I was supposed to show the teacher how to use it, but never had to in the end, if that says anything!

If you are thinking it isn't on windows 7 you can install it seperately I've installed it on Win7 at home but it's a cut down version that's been simplified for 'family' use (apparently). The staff are complaining that it's not as good as i-movie and it's missing certain features and transitions so i'm looking for something better.

We have just purchased some fantastic new video cams, which use a memory stick to store the video files. But they are MPEG, and Movie maker doesn't like them! Any ideas on alternatives please.... Wouldn't it have been helpful to research video formats prior to purchase, to ensure they are compatible with what you have in the way of software? Too many 'consumer' orientated cameras (with oh so convenient memory cards etc) are in actual fact all but useless when it comes to realistically doing anything creative with the footage. They are primarily designed for holidaymakers to watch themselves getting sunburnt in Turkey and nothing else.

I wouldn't, as I have not done the research, but by the same token, I wouldn't go out an buy something which I hadn't researched either. You are actually asking how long a piece of string is. Some cameras store to card, some to DVD, some to HDD and all in varying formats from one camera to the other. I'm sure there are plenty of cameras out there that can be recommended. However, if it were me, I'd find out what formats your chosen software supported (either existing or to be purchased) and work from there, buying a camera with a format that was compatible with said software. There is of course nothing wrong with MiniDV in the absence of other formats. Fully compatible with anything that's out there.
