kevbaz Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Got my order in infact i raised an order with simon last week for 10 of these model acers but at a higher price (which we were happy with i must add), but a delay this end meant it still hadnt been faxed through to him. so about an hour ago he had the curtousey to call me direct and to tell me he'd just recieved this new offer with a better sized montior at a much lower price. ask your elf, would all suppliers do that even when they know your committed to buy at a higher price? cant reccomend simon and his team highly enough ! 1

Edu-IT Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 In this instance Simon has lowered his price, but how many members have purchased equipment in the belief that they are getting the best possible price? That is why you get more than one quote. 1
GrumbleDook Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 To be honest I don't like the old Dutch Auction model as it can be damaging to buyer and seller in the long term ... and I've seen some schools got to silly lengths to get the best price (even regulars on here) with the war-cry of "Yet again we save some money!" albeit they have saved another 3 farthings! Customer service plays a heck of a lot to these things for me as well as consistency of price. If I am planning a 5 year budget there will be times I would go out to tender for a fixed price for the period of that project as you can get caught out with prices rising or hardware being unavailable, remembering to keep options in the bid to make sure price drops are included ... just blocking price rises. For small items I tend to put a spec to multiple resellers / providers and give them one shot ... if they don't give it their best first time they don't get the business. If they sell it at cost first time round and bump their prices up when I ask for the next set of items then they will not get the business because someone else comes in better. In this case Simon is saving face ... fair play to him, he is being canny and using it as a way of ensuring many folk think of him first when getting multiple quotes and many of us will have 6+ possible resellers to go to ... so even if we only get 3 quotes he stands a better chance of being asked to quote and therefore getting the custom. Many others do this ... IDNS, WStore, Dabs, Jigsaw ... all of which get my vote as good resellers to work with (especially when you get the right account manager). 3
vikpaw Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 When i was heavily involved in purchasing and obtaining quotes a lot, i would ask for a range of quotes 3-5, but then go back to my preferred supplier to see if he could match the best price given. Usually he could and so we'd go with them, the reason being as stated above, the relationship, support, knowledge, VALUE ADDED is essential for us, sometimes we'd even pay more to stay with a supplier we trusted who could quickly and efficiently solve any problems that arose - which is the true mark of a good supplier. Not that they provide the cheapest price, quickest quote etc, but how well they resolve any inevitable difficulties that may arise. 1
Haptic Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 We now have only 30 of these bad boys left so be quick so you dont miss out guys;)
DarrenC Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 It does seem that there is a huge misaprehention out in the education market place with many people that cheapest is always best. I hope this thread has shown that this is not always the case. I feel that people often forget that resellers are supposed to add value to the products you are purchasing from them. There are a vast number of resellers out there who will simply sell you products and then be no where to be seen if you require support or assistance. You also need to realise that resellers are businesses and if they make no profit selling kit they will go bust. This means that there is no back up for you at all and often little recourse apart from trying to go direct to the manufacturer which can be an issue. Don't get me wrong we all like a bargain, but this should not come at the expense of quality of service or a realistic business model. I think Simon has acted in a totally correct fashion, and the fact that he has contacted a customer whom had already placed an order to update them on an offer is admirable. 2

Sometimes cheapest is the only option to provide the equipment in many schools, thus taking what we can get. Support might be rubbish, product might not be upto scratch, but alas the kids go on learning at an accelerated rate rather than being hindered by equipment that doesn't work Edited December 8, 2009 by vikpaw swearing 1
