Deploying the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack

Hi guys/gals/etc,

 

I'm trying to deploy this beast across the network using GP & it's not working for me!

 

I've d/loaded the software & extracted the files to a shared directory (the same one I use for all of my software deployment).

 

I've created a GPO to run the install as Assigned software (exactly the same as the other software I've deployed).

 

I've checked the permissions on the MSI directory/files & they're exactly the same as everything else in that folder.

 

However, when I reboot the machines the "installing managed software" messages appear but skip straight over the OCP installation (exactly as it does if the software is already installed).

 

I can log on to a machine and enter \\servername\share\subdir\O12Conv.msi in the Run box & the OCP installs with no problem.

 

I've even tried following the suggestions at the bottom of this page but it just doesn't seem to want to install when the machine boots up!!

 

Aaaaaarrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

 

Any suggestions as to where else I can look??

Have you looked at the event logs via MMC on these machines?

Not yet - the rooms I've tried to roll it out to have been fully booked so far this morning, so I'll have a look at lunchtime - is there anything specific I should be looking out for?

Well specifically any errors in the Application and System logs as to why it's failing to deploy.

have tried to remove your old office package first on a machine to see if that does the trick, that's if you have office installed. just a thought:o

I believe you can install the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack with Office 2000/XP/2003 versions directly.

Y'know you can look at those logs remotely, right? Either fire up compmgmt.msc and right-click "Computer Management (local)" at the top of the tree and select "Connect to another computer" or fire up mmc.exe and create a custom one pulling event logs from a couple of machines.

I've checked a couple of PCs & the Event Viewer Application Log shows:

 

"Event ID: 102

The install of application Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system from policy DJC - MS Office 2007 Compatibility Pack Install failed. The error was : The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."

 

A quick search of the Interwebs & the MS Support Knowledgebase gave me this article.

 

I then tried the following:

 

Changed the Security Filtering on the GPO to 'Domain Computers' (instead of 'Authenticated Users');

Explicitly added read/execute permissions for 'Domain Computers' to the share/subdirectories/files (read/execute was already given to 'All Users').

 

Rebooted the machine, and still got the above error. Then tried a "gpupdate /force /boot" but got the same result.

whats the share permissions (rather than ntfs) and you havnt accidentally used d:\packages\officeconv.msi rather than \\server\packages$\officeconv.msi have you

Sorry - was juggling several dozen things yesterday & having brain-f4rts all over the place...

 

Full control for school admin/staff/pupil security groups.

The software is installed under the context of the machine account as it's done during startup. As an experiment give everyone read and see if that works.

After replying to sted I had another mooch around & the sub-directory (of the main share) I store my MSIs in was set up as a share in it's own right, with full control for 'Everyone'.

 

However, I've added read access for 'Everyone' to the main share permissions & it works!!!!! WoooooHooooooooo!!!

Now you know it's a permission issue you can tighten that permission up a bit.
