mac_shinobi Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Been at least one thread on here ref what is the best AV to use some swear by it and others at it but personally I suggested mcaffee or NOD32 ( lots on here saying how good NOD32 is ) also a few comments on sophos but personally im still against sophos.

I've just upgraded my free AVG to v9 (for home use) and it doesn't play nicely with IE8. The pages are VERY slow to load. Roll back to v8.5 and they're perfectly fine. This experience has made me decide to shell out and get a NOD32 licence.

Haptic Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 as a partner of both Nod32 and Avg , I wont be product biast here but for performance feedback Nod32 wins hands down but for popularity feedback AVG seems ahead by a mile, I think this is down to product awareness, I recently spoke to our account manager at Eset and proposed that we offer a special exclusive deal for edugeek members but they didnt want to know, I am however speaking with AVG next week and going to propose the same offer and see what they say , will obviously keep you guys updated , 2

You may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices in your household for use by people who reside there or for use in your home-based small business. Only valid for home use - if they're school laptops its no good.

AVG (and Im guessing most other 'free' antivirus products) would have the same limitation though if that were the case. AVG Free Licence 1. License Grant; Related Provisions a. dhicks Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 for popularity feedback AVG seems ahead by a mile, I think this is down to product awareness Which is fair enough - they do offer a decent product, which costs money to develop and maintain, free for personal use, obviously in the hope that when it gets to time for whoever buys the antivirus for a company to pick a product they'll have had a good experience with theirs already. It's got to beat having to employ an advertising department. I get the impression the original poster was referring to staff laptops as in personal laptops owned by the members of staff themselves, which as far as I can see would be no problem for us to install AVG Free on for them - i.e. the member of staff brings in a spyware-ridden laptop constantly churning the harddrive as the various dodgy apps it is running fight over control of the available resources, so you wipe-and-reinstall Windows XP along with AVG Free. -- David Hicks

For the first time ever I've picked up a couple of nasties which has never hapopened with AVG before, plus v9 makes my laptop run like a 3 legged tortoise Currently trying Kaspersky Internet Suite on a 30 day trial - so far so good Edited November 17, 2009 by PeteM

I would agree that Sec Essentials is a good way to go... use it at home and it works well and doesn't make the computer run slowly - also it's free!!!
