Smoothwall - URL Redirect

Is it possible to redirect URL's in SchoolGuardian/

 

eg user enters Bing but get redirected to www.google.co.uk ?

make a new category of type "content security"

probably need to add

"http://(.+)\.bing\.(.+)"->"http://www.google.co.uk"

 

that might overmatch a spot, but shouldn't be too bad. Not had chance to run it out, so let me know if you run into bother.

 

Oh, you'll have to add it into a filter, and then apply that filter (if it isn't already applied).

Correct if they go http://www.edugeek.net (.com etc) it goes to http://ICTHELPDESK instead. If were too good on here they won't need me

I hate to revive such an old thread, but it sparked an idea I had a while back...

 

Is is possible to redirect, but also include the original link

 

for example.. user tries to visit http://www.sometaggedsite.com/somepage.php however it is intercepted and redirected to http://www.mysite.com/?link=http://www.sometaggedsite.com/somepage.php

Possibly. I'd have to try it, youd need to use a \1 style reference - I doubt it TBH.

Sorry to drag up an old thread. How do you achieve this in smoothwall now? Can't see "Guardian/filtering/user defined" want to redirect from google to bing

It's under content modifications, but you will need to get support to turn on advanced mode for you, as most content mods are well hidden (for good reason!)

It is - you will need to raise a support ticket for it.

Can I ask why you want to do this? If it might be a common thing, we can potentially release a "proper" version.

There's also the slightly odd version where you block the site you want to redirect, and use blockpage redirection, but i'd say that's dangerous with a domain like this.

Here is another solution

 

Create a custom category containing the domain you want to redirect. Put a block policy in place in the web filter for that category.

 

Go to Guardian - block page - Block Pages and create a new blockpage. Enable the redirect to blockpage option and enter the URL/domain you would like to redirect to.

 

Once saved, create anew blockpage policy where the what is the custom category containing the domain you want to redirect and the blockpage is the newly created redirect to new URL blockpage.

 

Jobs a good one and no faffing about with regular expressions.

 

With the capita.co.uk to capita.com I would be careful as Tom says - why is this needed? When you go to com, it may redirect you back to co.uk since the originating IP is in UK so you may get a loop.

Thanks for the replies, I tried a live chat with Smoothwall support yesterday before posting here and they said it wasn't possible. I then found this thread so I thought I would see if it was or if it was a depreciated feature. I will try again with Smoothwall support, but first I will also test your idea @ibpalle.

 

The reason behind it is we are having a odd issue with SIMS.net services internet connectivity test failing. When I look at the Smoothwall log for the PC that I run the test on it calls out to http://www.capita.co.uk which I am unable to resolve, either at work or at home. My thinking was if I redirect to capita.com which does resolve then it may pass the test.

 

Just out of interest can either of you resolve http://www.capita.co.uk?

 

I have logged this with CAPITA but they say its a filtering/firewall issue at our end and say that they don't call out to http://www.capita.co.uk for the test. They gave me a list of urls which they use, all of which I have whitelisted and can resolve OK here.

So if they do not call that co.uk domain, where is that traffic coming from?

We are running the summer release version 7.188

 

The traffic is coming from SIMS, their support just won't acknowledge it. When they re-branded they have failed to correctly setup http://www.capita.co.uk http://capita.co.uk resolves and redirects to capita.com

 

Your 'fix' using the blockpage works and the internet test now passes in SIMS. Next step is to get capita support to acknowledge this and fix it. I will remove the blockpages as the test doesn't actually affect anything and will wait for a fix from Capita.
