Wireless PC's and profiles

Right, different issue to other thread.

 

Gave up on Buffalo and have stuck bog standard AP in its place for now....but im having different issues.

 

When logging on i get a warning that the domain cannot be found so i dont think the PC is connecting straight away to the AP.

 

I log on as Administrator i can connect to the ap, its at full strength.

 

So i log off and log on as student or staff and get that it cannot find my profile, then moans it cant find a local one. It logs me in but with no policies in place. The internet works fine and connection to the server works fine but they have access to everything....

 

so basically 2 issues. Not connecting straight away to AP and then not downloading profiles from the server.

 

Help please...

I know, I had this before, double check where the student / staff profiles are connecting to, just mean where its trying to connect to on the server the profile isnt there

it would be in your Active Directory, go to the properties of a users and check their "Profile Path" :"Mine is \\curricsvr1\Profiles$\MandatoryProfile2" and double check that folder where the Profile is held has the correct permissions for it.

hmm, mine are stored at \\curricsvr1\Profiles$\"myusername"

 

i dont have a problem anywhere else with profiles....just these 3 computers that are attempting to connect wirelessly....

 

Whats annoying is its making winsuite look good at the moment cus it didnt have a problem!!

Hi,

 

You are using the Windows to control the wireless card in the laptop aren't you? Most 3rd party ones won't do pre-log on authentication unless told too.

 

In your AD have you got the Laptops in their own OU and if so have you told them to wait for the network to be ready before logging on?

try using use a local machine gpo of, Local Computer policy>Computer Configuration>Addministrative Templates>System>Logon>Always wait for the network at start up and logon. Enable this and that might just work:)

Didnt work...

 

Still saying it cant find the profiles. At some points it says it cant find the domain. so annoying!! Why did it work for bloomin winsuite!!!!

As Tricky Dicky Said are you using windows to manage the wireless connection? I’ve come across allsorts of problems in the past when using the utilities from the makers of the wireless cards if not change that within the properties box for that connection, can you log on with a local Admin account and check to see if all is correct with it’s ip address, if they are assigned via dhcp maybe try to give them a static address it could be that they aren’t getting an address from your dhcp server for some strange reason. also see if you can browse to where the profiles are on your network. Hope this might be of some help:) Let's know how you get on

I always use windows to control the wireless....third party ones do my nut in...there is a third party bit of software on there but when you access it it says that windows is in control.

 

Thanks i shall have a look at the ip and maybe try the static ip address..

Which 3rd party software is it?

 

When you updated the GPOs did you run both a gpupdate on the server and then a few minutes later a gpupdate /force on the laptop? I always try and do this when I'm getting weird problems and always over a wired connection.

I'd remove the 3rd party altogether, had similar issues with a laptop where the intel pro suite thing was still installed.

 

Sounds like you're having fun with wireless this week though!

If it is Intel, don't remove it altogether. In Add/Remove do a modify and just select to uninstall everything but the driver itself.

also i find rejoing the domain may help, do it by wyfy, i had problems with dells and HPs when joining a domain i used cable. when i rebooted and loged on by wyfy it could not find the network.. wierd but it did work.

That's your problem - the usb 2 wifi adaptor - your better off getting the pcmcia wifi cards assuming the laptops have the pcmcia slots.

 

and also agree with removing there own utility software and just using the relevant driver and getting windows to deal with the wifi

not laptops....pc's.

 

They worked fine before the network was changed and they had winsuite on. Since they've been imaged and the network runs differently they've been playing up.

 

I'm wondering whether the pants basic dlink AP isnt helping either....

When you try to log on to the machine which error message is coming up?

 

Is it "Can't find the domain" or "computer account doesn't exist"? I'm just thinking, if you have had a major overhaul of the network, it might be that the domain accounts just haven't been properly recreated in the correct OU and hence they can't be found.

 

It might be worth trying a PCI wireless adaptor as well because they will normally initialize on start up. I've got one PC on wireless though and I have to say it's a bit flaky.

 

I'd be surprised if it was the AP, Just check it hasn't got any sort of MAC filtering or user filtering on it.

do you have any PC still set up the old way b4 re-image ??

or are these 3 the only ones?

 

if you do have some still working OK try taking the old drivers off them with Device driver backup, restoration, update and removal software for Windows, drivers backup, backup drivers

 

and install the Drivers on the new img..

 

if you still have no joy.

look at belkin PCI wyfy cards it will save you lots of problems..

 

But still try un-join from the domain network and rejoin to the domain. and keep the usb wyfy in the same port at all times.

Have removed from domain and reconnected wirelessly

I get as far as Loading personal settings. Get the message it cant find profiles and then cant find temporary.
