Just to let all know, NewSID from Sysinternals (Microsoft) is being retired today.

 

While there will be a million mirrors on the internet afterwards, it might still be sensible to grab it today while the newest is on the site.

 

NewSID v4.10

 

Get it while its there, "just in case" :)

Well Sysprep is the Official way to do things, NewSID is just another tool (with a few other special abilities)

 

Really, we should be deploying Vista / Win7 via Windows Deployment Services and not needing to change the SID of a workstation.

 

We (a business) unfortunately use Windows XP, so it might be useful here (im using it with vmware for some test workstations to package to MSI)

 

Its probably not a useful tool anymore so Microsoft are depreciating it.

The page says

 

Version 4.0 introduces support for Windows XP and .NET Server, a wizard-style interface, allows you to specify the SID that you want applied, Registry compaction and also the option to rename a computer (which results in a change of both NetBIOS and DNS names).

 

So it doesnt appear to support Vista/7

thanks for the heads up , have downloaded that and saved a copy of there web page before they take it down.

 

Looks like If I want to suggest using SID to either upload both the saved web page and sid zip file or stick to suggesting sysprep lol

Bummer. :(

 

So useful when Ghost fails on its SID change, and since I never learnt how to use Sysprep, NewSID is always a good fallback.

 

Suppose I should start reading up about Sysprep...
