TheCrust Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Does anyone know if its possible to buy just the 12.5 client agents for our R2 boxes and have them backup to our 12.0 media server? I know newer versions of the media server will support older clients, but what about older media servers supporting newer clients...? I am loathe to buy the new version of BackupExec just to support the move over to R2 and am seriously contemplating alternatives, but I'd much rather adapt our existing infrastructure to support the new servers if I can.

cookie_monster Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 In my honest opinion unless you really need R2 I'd stick with 2008 as BE 12 will work with that, I'm pretty sure you can't use agents that are a newer version to your media server. I'm not 100% on 12 Media server and 12.5 agents but we couldn't use V12 Agents with an 11D media server. The hotfix seems to not exist at the moment however Typical

TheCrust Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 That's how we're backing up the R2 boxes at the moment - individual backup jobs dumping their files over to a NAS box - but I'd much rather be able to stick it onto the same tape as the rest and stick that in our offsite safe! Oh well, Arcserve backup here I come!

Might be worth looking at short term Not sure about R2 but Windows Backup in 2008 is great, it's a bit basic but my god it's fast compared to file level based software like BE. I use it when i'm going to make big changes to a server as it images the system at the same time. You can also connect the backup files to Virtual Server just like a hard drive to browse all of the files if you want to find just one. It's a pain having to backup the whole volume each time but for one off backups it's awsome. 100Gb backup last night inc system image accross the network to a shared Seagate Freeagent took 1 hour 30. Not bad. To our SAN it's done in no time. Edited October 15, 2009 by cookie_monster

An earlier FA250 has been fine, but I've gone through a couple of FA500s which couldn't read (allegedly happily written) data back at 450GB and 320GB full respectively. Didn't lose anything besides lots of time because of the amount of data I had to rehome, but I was not a happy bunny over that.

I'll take a look tomorrow I've got a selection of them, a couple of 250Gb ones a couple of 500Gb ones and 1Tb ones. I've not had any issues with any of them and most of them are full. I generally use them just before the summer madness to backup all data and images before I go mad upgrading.
