(and also knowing it will restart in a controlled environment!) Ie, I'd rather know it'll restart when I reset it, than if it powers down for any other reason. Chunks

I've had a windows server 2003 box up for over a year before, but needed a re-boot after some of the dreded windows updates! Currently re-start my entire server infrastucture every holiday just to give it the best chance of a problem free term Mike.

Only reason for the uptime was a BT 0800 Free Weekend (dialup!) that never cut me off on the Sunday night like it should have. 4 solid weeks of free ISDN access and a reboot afterwards only because I couldnt wait any longer for the upgrade I'd bought a fortnight before Gotta love Freenas though, one of my favourite ever little things

Valid point, but it's only an FTP / Temp dump box for non important data. I'm surprised the PSU on the MB is still going - the old RM box it's in must be almost 10 years old.....

Indeed, as you can see the web filter was clearly 'broken' that day......keeps going down - gives me such a headache.....
Arcath Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 my home server was on for 150 days and then a dreaded powercut that lasted longer than the 40 mins the UPS can handle and it died and it died horribly cause it had to do a full scan of all 2.5TB and then it found a problem, so i had to crwal into the loftspace and pull it out to sort it out.

Same happened to me once. Except I had some dodgy memory sticks, so once the RAID rebuild had gotten so far the machine would just lock up and only a hard reset would bring it back. Then the RAID rebuild would carry on... and repeat! And of course while it's doing a RAID rebuild, fsck also wanted to run...
tech_guy Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Last place I worked at had an NT4 server box that everyone had 'forgotten' about (no-one could be ar$ed to trudge over to the portacabin where it was shoved in a storeroom chugging away under mounds of paper, to service / maintain it. I went over to look at it out of curiosity and found it had been running for two years almost. The screen image was burnt in to the crt as no screensaver / power save had been set. I rebooted it out of interest to see what happened, half expecting it to croak in the process, but it came up happy as larry. It was a Viglen. Nice machine.

Old fogies with their in-jokes and the old technology and their golden memories of yester-year. In my day service packs never got above 4 and they stayed installed!

Doesnt affect me but when i have peole sleeping in the room aswell they complain about it

I 'nicked' it and used it for about a year afterwards at home to do work on. It then went back and was used as a fileserver. The crt we gave to a member of staff we all hated.
