How much is the earth? They all cost over a grand and require subscribtions. Just make sure you look at the software solutions as the hardware ones really do cost the earth.

Best commercial imo - Smoothwall

Best free - Daguardian

FWIW, we use smoothwall express 3 with the dansguadian addon. It's "ok" however the DG mod is still very underdeveloped for smoothwall express 3 and thus has no proper GUI, so alot needs to be in the CLI, and occasionally we will need to restart the service. I think dansguardian offers you greater power of filtering as opposed to urlfilter and advanced proxy, but the latter is easier to use and is probably sufficient for most people/environments.

If you want simplicity, then what webman suggested is probably the best bet, but if you want greater control then dansguardian is worth looking at (which I think also works with IPcop?)

..and yes the whole lot is free, but does take some effort on your part to get up and running properly! :)

IMHO look no further than Smoothwall. The UTM is the thing to go for - everything in one box... plug it in and away you go. It's VERY reasonably priced too - Jamman960 will be kicking himself to hear that he could have got a UTM and a year's subscription for the price he's paid just for his Not-so-Smartfilter licenses (before buying a server, Windows and ISA)!

If you need to hear more, see SmoothWall | Company » Testimonials (mostly 'geek members!)

Fully agree with Ric there, for what we would be paying for a new ISA Server, we got a Smoothwall UTM, the years sub and a product that ticks more boxes and does more for us than ISA could ever do.

Thanks guys I got options to look at now. What kind of price ate you looking at for the smoothwall utm?

I cannot remember what I paid for my UTM, but the UTM has a fairly fixed price (they make 3 models of it depending on the size of Network you have) then you just add the number of clients on to the filter licence part (its per client not per user which is a good way of doing it unlike other competitor products that are per user!)

I would advise giving the Smoothwall team a ring - try Claire - 0113 3874165 thats her Direct Line I am sure she will look after you :)
