Shame about the rubbish south africa setting.

 

I would call you a *** but I'm going to refrain from that. What's wrong with South Africa as a setting exactly?

 

I thought the setting was clear and precise and the content of the movie fitted into the environment entirely.

 

Idiots these days, and yes I am from South Africa as are many users on this forum.

Well as stated above by timzim it doesn't specifically have to be about apartheid the same story could be used in many locations.

 

BTW it was an allegory, not a parody, and not just of apartheid but of plenty of other occasions where it's been politically expedient to de-humanise a section of society in order to control them, e.g. 1930s Germany, 1970s Cambodia, 1990s Croatia, etc, etc

 

Of course with one of the writers or directors being South African I suspect it was set in Cape Town for a reason

I thought it was set in Soweto, which is inside Johannesburg, haven't seen it yet, don't have a penny to my name with the missus on our saving rampage for our mortgage deposit. I get paid on Friday, on Saturday, I'll have just enough for a Chubba lolly and that's it.

It's based on a short film called "alive in Jo'burg". It's directed and written by Neill Blomkamp. Peter Jackson produced it.

 

Saw it when it first came out. I enjoyed it. Not entirely what I expected. Would have prefered it to finish in the same style as it starting without it getting too hollywood, with the whole transformers/robocop style ending.

 

There is talk of a sequel, or a prequel based around their arrival in the 80s. I'm hoping that if they do it's not too much of a "prawn returns to Earth hell bent on revenge", and keep in touch with the struggle against the segregation / integration with the rest of society, but not sure that they will do that.

Sony advertised the movie perfectly, all the signs out there, the websites, and the links to other websites, is clearly very elaborate marketing.

The writers will probably want to do that, but it depends on Jackson and the rest of the Hollywood crowd will let them, or push for the big budget hollywood effects.
