What PC?

Just been to take a look at a friends computer, and have told her that it's as good as goosed and she should get a new one. Question is, I haven't exactly seen any bargains lately.

 

So, cheap as can be (£200-£250 would be good, cheaper still if possible), what PC's would you recommend to replace her stone age pile of junk?

 

Only the base unit (no monitor, mouse, keyboard etc) and no Operating System included is a preference (but must support XP).

 

I've seen a few on Ebuyer that may be ok, but will wait to see what you guys say first.

build your own... as you (proberly) won't need a new CD drive and case and maybe even HDD (unless thats what fuxed it)....

Depending upon how much time you want to spend on it you could pick up something like this for a little more at £269.99 from Overclockers with no OS etc. (Check their copy of XP is suitable to transfer onto this new PC).

build one yerself as per above comment and that way you will only need to replace the major components ie mobo, ram, cpu and graphics card ( possibly ) and then if they wanted a better hard drive depending on whether the mobo supports the old hdd ( ie ide or sata or both ) then you could either use the old hdd or just get a new sata one.

£200 quid for a computer? I would never pay more than 50 quid!

I would build one myself if i were you but sometimes with a tight budget you are better off buying a base unit off the shelf.

 

Try Aria or Novatech if funds are tight. Try their bare bones systems and just add a couple bits and there you go. If you have a few hard drives or cds lying around it will save more.

Depending in her requirements, what about picking up a 2nd hand or refurbished system from eBay? I've always managed to get a bargain with some careful shopping. I got my current machine from there last April (Dell GX620, Pentium D 3.2GHz 2GB RAM £150)

Give ICT Direct (ICT Direct - computer hardware for ict in education - primary, secondary, special needs schools and colleges) a ring. For £250 you should be able to get something quite reasonable with a TFT screen to boot + 12 month warranty!

Ok - still awaiting possible quotes from EduGeek sponsors, but if I was to go down the buying elsewhere route I think it would be this system:

What do you guys think? She only browses the net and does a few word documents, and I know this is a bit over-specced, but my theory is that this machine should last her a good five years.

Yep no bargains is an understatement, plenty of pre bult run word systems out there.

 

overclockers, ebuyer loads of places. Just depends on the needs of the user. Of course if you want to introduce her to the latest halo, far cry and flight sim X then thats a whole different kettle of cutting edge £££ tech.....

 

 

....thinking about it you can get net books and happy go lucky laptops for £250 these days too. worth looking into for mobility?
