Do any of you use UPS's or surge protection on your network switches?

Every power cut i poop my pants. just seems silly that no one ever installed them here before.

My core switch has a duel power supply. One of these is connected into the main server room UPS to keep it running for a short while in the event of a power failure, mainly so the servers can still communicate with the UPS, as they all run network shutdown and rely on the switch for communication.

On the rest of my cabinets, never seen the point. If there's a powercut then the network is useless anyway, and as for surge protection all my HP procurve switches have a lifetime warranty so no worries there :)

ours all all warranty covered, so no real stress there. Its just a pain in the ass (and iminent me running to hide) when after power failure one dies and kills a room or two.

(Happened 1st day back here :( wasnt popular that day)

We have a small ups in most network cabinets, it's the single most effective (price vs improvement) upgrade I've carried out here.

Mind you, we're in a valley at the end of a long chain of overhead power, so our supply is probably flakier than most peoples.

I've always got a couple of spare switches knocking about that I could swap out in an emergency situation. ;)

We've just ordered 15 rack mount UPS exactly for this.

As we have recently moved to VOIP someone suddenly mentioned to me that every time the power goes off we will lose the phone system.. ach ! :(

Dunno what they're like yet, but they do remote access and SNMP.

About £500 each.

We have them only on strategically important switches - ie. the core switch, and the switch used by our admin office. This ensures internet connectivity remains during power failures, as do our voip phones in the admin office (we don't need that sort of reliability for phones in random classrooms). Our cabs don't have enough space for much more in anyway...

We lose the phone system anyway, as the switchboard is in one of the offices on the wall, and is hard wired in so couldn't really be put on a UPS.

We have 3 emergency analogue lines in stratigic places through out the building for use when the power fails, these serve the purpose fine.

We have them in our core server cabinet and in the second computer room cabinet. These locations have our high end HP Procurves in them. The other cabinets in the school don't have space for a UPS as they are 4U high. Anyway, these switches are all ancient D-Link or Cnet switches, which we are slowly replacing.

Once all the cabinets have Procurves in them, I'm not sure what we are going to do. Need to protect them but no space

Put the UPS on top of the cabinet if there's enough clearance?

Replace the cabinets with larger ones? We did that with all our cabs last year.

Mmm, H&S....:scared:

Maybe also put a few pot plants on top of it and water them regularly, plus any old WW2 hand grenades you have lying around...

Most UPSs are pretty heavy (ours = 60kg) and therefore include fairly strong manufacturer recommendations that they are only mounted at the bottom of network cabinets. Mounting at the top will usually make the cabinet top-heavy and liable to topple over when pushed, crushing to death the user. Placing the ups loosely on the top of the cabinet therefore seems, imho, slightly less wise than than that bloke on TV who put a load of scorpions in his pants. Or did I misunderstand your post?

Do you really need UPSs that heavy for a couple of switches? I was thinking more along the lines of the small desktop-type ones. Although, if your cabs are fixed to a strong enough wall using appropriate methods (4 huge bolts for each corner?) you could probably put anything on them :) Edited by webman

I'd be pretty uncomfortable putting anything as heavy as a ups in our wall mounted cabinets. While they are well secured it seems like an unnecessary weight. I only have ups for the core switches which are required for everything to shut down if power fails.

I suppose some form of surge protection would be an idea, but no need for more than that really.
