Ok, our LEA upgraded our cachepilot today, and have left us the old one to do whatever we want with it!

 

Any ideas what to do with it? It is fairly new (2-3 years)!!

The spec is:

• 2.4 GHz Processor
  
• 8 GB RAM
  
• 80 GB Hard Drive (I think, it may be more)
  

I have no idea what it is capable of, also the BIOS is password protected!

 

If I wanted to do internet filtering/caching/media streaming what would I need to do?? Really have no idea how to use one of these!!

Might sound a daft question comming from a 'supposed' technician but whats the easiest way to find out what spec our Equinet Cachepilot is? I now have two going spare now we got rid of Espresso at those schools ( and I now have the extra cash to buy more print toner with ! ).

I found the spec on the POST screen when it switches on (except the hard drive, which I guessed, judging by the amount of content on it)

we have 2 crap-pilots.

 

1 is in active service (forced by LEA) and the other I have been messing with to put smoothwall on.

I would change the hard drive and fans as they will be goosed and make it into a print server or a dansguardian box.

well to get the BIOS password removed I intend on removing the CMOS battery, does the trick every time , then hopefully if all goes well Dansguardian will go on it (Thanks to Ricki and his install documents!)

Take the case off and check the motherboard - there's generally a couple of pins you can short out with one of those widgets you set harddrive options with (brain fails me: what are those called?), or with the tip of a screwdriver, to reset the BIOS. Find the model number of the motherboard and search Google for the manual if you're not sure.

Just done that myself. Now got a 2.4Ghz Celeron, 200Gb HD with 1Gb of RAM...guess which box is going to be my new FOG server :-)

Am i right in thinking they only have a 10/100 card in them? I see there's a PCI slot cover on the back, now I'm assuming if you put in a 90 deg PCI thingy you could stick a Gig NIC in and use as My FOG Server? Mine has a 120Gb drive, but obviously any old PATA drive can be used. Unfortunatly mines looking like its dead, time to break out the screwdriver and multi meter!
