Damn these overpaid headteachers!

BBC has a story this morning about how the 'bonus culture' is supposedly entering schools. However, in typical BBC editorial fashion (i.e. "Proofreading? Wot's than then?"), they have made a somewhat ridiculous blunder in stating (twice) that:

 

"Some school governing bodies have advertised

five figure salaries

to attract good candidates to run schools"

 

FIVE FIGURE SALARIES?! HOW DARE THEY!

You have to love the BBC's way of reporting. How dare they pay headteachers 5 figures salaries! Why we should pay them 4 figures salaries max.

I would say you can't expect quality journalism from any news source that posts articles anonymously. Most BBC News articles are completely uncredited.

how about we (read: edugeek regulars) create some bogus info somewhere on wikipedia (presumably about UK education?) and see if we can get it to appear in a BBC article?

In general I agree with this, but the one exception I know of is The Economist news paper, where for the vast majority of articles they don't actually print a byline.

Erm, Private Eye has probably the best journalism in the UK. (imo of course)

Private Eye do a crackin job when you consider they all only work part time. One week they sit round doing bugger all and the other they slog their guts out on high quality investigative journalism ... and a fair chunk of that is investigating journalists themselves.

 

Anyone that pokes fun at journos gets a thumbs up in my book. A good number of hacks are only a few steps above lawyers! (there are notable exceptions ... especially in tech and education ...)
