Jon Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 I have just been handed an Acer Travelmate 7720 that was being used by a now Ex-Member of staff who in now uncontactable... They have seen fit to set the HDD password in Bios, I have no idea of what it could be. Does anybody know of a way to recover it whilst kepping any data intact.
bossman Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 @Jon: Have you tried resetting the BIOS by flipping the battery or shorting the pins on the Motherboard? This would be the normal approach to the problem. 1
plexer Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 HDD password different to bios one. It's on the HDD controller itself
Jon Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 @Jon: Have you tried resetting the BIOS by flipping the battery or shorting the pins on the Motherboard? This would be the normal approach to the problem. The bios was also locked, I have overcome this, this password is actually on the HDD itself.
Jon Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 HDD Unlock - Overview Ben I have looked at this, unfortunaly is seems as if this method will also destroy any data on the the disc.
Michael Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Does anybody know of a way to recover it whilst kepping any data intact. Extract the hard drive and install it in another system as a secondary drive. If it's SATA, then it'll use the same connections as with desktop hard drives. The hard drive itself isn't passworded, it's all on the laptop itself
Jon Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 I have tried this, The drive is unreadable in another system. The password does appear to be on the drive itself.
plexer Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 HDD password is part of the ATA standard and is on the controller/firmware area of the drive. If you want to have the data intact then that same companies other service is what you want. Repair Station. Licenses Ben
Jon Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 That looks interesting, I will have to see if we can raise the $49. I have not been told how valuable the data is, only that they would like to recover it... Have you succesfully used this software yourself?
plexer Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 No I haven't sorry, but you can run the diagnose on it and it will tell you if it will be able to recover it. Ben
smadison Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 go to Hiren's BootCD 10.0 - www.hiren.info and look at ATAPWD 1.2 Hard Disk Password Utility
tarquel Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Also... if the HDD isnt readable in another system, its feasible that the user has "somehow" used a boot CD / some install to encrypt the hard drive Nath.
AXE Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 go to Hiren's BootCD 10.0 - www.hiren.info and look at ATAPWD 1.2 Hard Disk Password Utility You can download Hiren's Boot CD from http://www.hirensbootcd.net/
