Hi All

We will be adding 300 netbooks to our network bringing our total number 600

Currently I have 1 server 2003

I am concerned log on times will increase

Does anyone have any suggestions

Do I purchase additional servers

If so what service controls the logon authentication

Thanks any ideas would be much appreciated

Logon times will only increase if everybody is trying to log on at the same time. It would make more sense to have more servers especially if more work will need to be saved to the users area on the server as well as load balancing.

Hi djgreek,

What is your current setup at the moment? Is it just one server completley, are files served from somewhere else (another file server, a san?).

I would definetly add more "domain controllers" to your network, for a start..

Hi

Current set up

Server 2003

Proxy Server which also controls wireless authentication

Webserver (intranet)

No extra student data will be added to server

The issue will be at 9.00 am when the netbook users all try and log on at the same time

Do you suggest 2 extra domain controllers and a SAN

If your data will not increase in size then I would leave the SAN for now but I would defiantly have another DC in your setup even if it's just a low spec one to provide redundancy for your Active Directory.

You really need to get another DC on-line, what happens if the current one crashes???

No one would be able to log on.

Redundancy is far more important than speed in my opinion.

What do you all suggest

I'd say Server1 DC with DNS and DHCP, Server2 DC Secondary DNS server (doesn't need to be really high spec) then Server3 (Higher Spec) as a member server running apps that you don't want on a DC e.g. Web Server, SQL, WSUS etc

Fully agree with CM here... as an extra you could place a second DHCP server on DC2.
