I got 2007 SP1 (roll-update 9) on my box atm - its a test box soooooooooooooooooooo Im gonna stick SP2 on it.

Installed on my Exch 2007 SP1 test bed I'd only just knocked up.

 

The very last thing - one of the services didnt restart automatically - but that was a simple reboot of all the exchange boxes [a test bed so no one is using it but something to be mindful of if u attempt this on something live - probably best out of hours ] and it all came up nice.

I'm quite disappointed that you can't install this on Windows Server 2008 R2

Said this before, but: An Exchange box should do nothing besides Exchange, so the underlying OS should be largely irrelevant. And with E2K7 it helps if you've got the 32 bit management tools installed on a 32-bit OS somewhere, which gives you even less cause to go use whatever 2K8 R2 might have given you on the actual exchange box.

It's not a huge problem as such, just means that on my virtual test network I have to mix different versions of OS and have to download/dig out the copy I have of the first release

After the test server upgraded fine and stress-testing didn't show any wierdness, I upgraded the production box last night (I wanted the cmdlets). Excluding backup times for the mailserver and dcs, it took around 30mins, plus post-testing and backups.

 

The setup log was clean, Exchange Best Practises Analyser shows no issues and windows event logs are happy.

I think I may have misunderstood this whole Exchange 2007 SP2 will not run on Server 2008 R2 issue.

I assumed it meant that Exchange 2007 Service Pack 2 cannot be installed to a machine running Server 2008 R2? I'm trying to install it to a server Running Server 2008 SP2 and I keep getting:

 

"[ERROR] Cannot find at least one domain controller running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later in domain 'DC=DCName,DC=com,DC=DCName'. This could be the result of moving domain controller objects in Active Directory. Check that at least one domain controller running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later is located in the 'Domain Controllers' organizational unit (OU) and rerun setup."

 

So just a warning to all of you, it refers to your Active Directory Forest as well...

And what are the chances, I had JUST upgraded both our Domain Controllers to R2

You Had Me At EHLO... : Exchange Server 2007 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2

It's totally unsupported for install on 2008 R2. If you want to hack it and force it to install then that's your call but if your doing it in a production environment and it totally screws up, expect MS to laugh at you if you require help. I'm pretty bleeding edge and have forced software to run on unsupported OS's before, but exchange is a whole different kettle of fish. I wouldn't even bother.

 

They will however support it on a 2008 R2 domain, but the underlying OS on your exchange server must be 2003 or 2008.

 

Back on topic tho, does anyone know if SP2 for exchange breaks backup exec at all?

I've upgraded mine without any problems.

I upgraded mine in a live enviroment with no problems. Remember, if like me you have Forefront protection 2010 for exchange server, you need to stop the forefront services first before applying the service pack.
