Finally got new NAS going (see other post) got backup going but as i was about to leave for the evening, noticed that status it was degraded....what does this mean and what do i do? Is my backup a waste of time?
SYNACK Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 One of your drives is toast, you will need to replace it in all likelyhood. Check the device for status lights or the config page to see which one it is. Edit: actually depending on how long it has been on and the device itself it may still be building the mirror, status page should tell you anyhow.

SYNACK Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Depends on the device and its default behaviour (didn't see the other thread so don't know what it is). Depending on the software it could be still formatting and building the drive mirror but allow data to be written to it anyway as it is completing the rest. Other devices will not allow you to write data untill this initial build is complate. You would need to look at the extended or detailed status of the device/drive set to see if it says if it is building or whether a drive has actually failed. Devices can come broken out of the box but it sounds likely that the system is still building the mirror. As such it does not have a complete mirror (both copies) yet so the RAID drive is degraded (not completely redundant and functioning at full performance).
DMcCoy Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Was the RAID array just created? It could easily take 4-8 hours to build the array depending on the box, it you have just created it then this will probably remain on degraded until it has finished the initial build.
Little-Miss Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 Long story short, i purchased it along with our new server, but current NAS died so had to get it early. Provider engineers did the first bit of setup giving it and IP and what not and setting the raid so i guess that got the process going but if it can take up to 8 hours im guessing they didnt have it on that long....

Ive had look at settings, one page says "Sync Time Remaining: Degraded" Now this is pretty much brand new out of the box, will my provider get me another HDD for it? Or they gonna try and tell me i've bust it? (Its a Dlink DNS 323)

Little-Miss Posted July 24, 2009 Author Posted July 24, 2009 No you didnt dream it sysman, when i first plugged the drive in, i noticed there was no second light for the drive so i opened it up to find it loose so reconnected it. Will rebuilding the RAID lose what i have on there? If so it may have to wait till after new server is up and running because it currently holds my only full backup of our current server.

powdarrmonkey Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 If it's only been on a short time, and especially at this time of day, I'd leave it switched on over the weekend to rule out that it's building the array for the first time. If it's still degraded on Monday, revisit the problem. If it's something like a loose cable, you might get away with it rebuilding on its own, or you may have to intervene and request a rebuild (possibly from scratch). If everything seems ok, send it back.

powdarrmonkey Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Well, normally I'd say replace the disk, but if it's brand new out of the box (or within warranty) it deserves to be replaced in whole. If there's a silly amount of data on it, though, £40 for a new disk isn't so bad compared with the time it takes to get the data off first. 1

(Its a Dlink DNS 323) According to the manual ( http://static.compusa.com/pdf/D-link-DNS-323-manual.pdf ) unless one of the drive status lights is amber then it is not a failed drive and is just rebuilding. The "Sync Time Remaining: Degraded" message also points to this as it may not have an estimate on the time remaining just that there is some remaining untill it is finnished rebuilding. The CPU throughput on these devices is not stupendously fast and so depending on the size of the drives and how much data is involved it could take quite a long time to fully come up to sync. Especially if there is drive activity which will need to be caught up on. If it is a faulty disk then it should definatly be under warrenty cover from your supplier and the actual hard drive vendor itself if nessisary. As to the unit itself, from what I have read about them they seem to be a good unit and cn even be expanded by tweaking to run all sorts of other tasks that are probably not to realivant at this time. 1

Had enough of winsuite, the server itself is about 4-5 years old, 1gig of ram and is full to the brim with crap, its had no sort of TLC and i havent got the patience to sit there trying to breathe some life into it! So i decided to mark my 1 year of being there with a whole new network, thats run properly. How a school network should be run! lol

SYNACK Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Depending on how much budget you pushed through in one go they probably need a breather anyway and I'm certain that you will end up adding more improvements over time. Its a good place to be, after the initial implementation, inevitable jitters and staff mini meltdowns over stuff changing they start to realize how much better the new system is. You also usually get a bit of a break as all of the little matinence based annoyances from the ageing of the old system melt away. The trick then is to dispel the demand for aparent miricles which springs up suprisingly quickly. 1
