Occasionally when I go out trouble-shooting in the IT rooms (trying to fix things before they break) the pockets magically expand to fit all sorts - network cables, mice, screwdrivers, compressed air cans, dusters, glass spray, cable ties...

In the office we have all sorts of screwdriver, hockey stick, snips, molegrips, sockets, Cat5 tester, labeler, hammer drill. We've also got Ultimate Boot disk, HP boot diagnostic and Netbootdisk with ghost for the odd machine that won't Pixie boot. I don't carry tools needlesly, I'm far too prone to loosing them. I'm still being reminded about some wire cutters I left in the ceiling of the english block the summer before last (even though I replaced them).

NPearce Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 On my person, * Mobile Phone, HTC Diamond with Gmail synced mail, calendar etc. Files with serial number lists, passwords and all the info that I cannot quite remember. * 4 USB Memory Sticks, 1gb Hirens USB, 2gb Applications (browsers, AV installs/updates, Scripts, all the common stuff I use), 4gb Files and documents synced with laptop. * Small Gerber Multitool, scissors, small penknife, screwdrivers etc. * Keys for particular site. My Bag * Laptop, Considered a netbook for space saving but the laptop will run all school software without question. * Network Cable * Multimeter * Network Cable tester * Packet of AA and AAA batteries * Mouse * 3.5 & 2.5 HDD to USB connector * Toolkit - Usual assortment including RJ45 crimp tool and connectors * 3m Cable access kit * Variable heat Soldering kit - If I know its required All images etc are kept on the server at each site. Any replacement kit like HDD's, power adapters etc are also kept at each site. I did try and get a shared budget of a couple of hundred pound for things like cable drums, air dusters etc but they don't like sharing so I end up ordering stuff when required. Nathan
laserblazer Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 On a strap attached to my trouser belt. Electrician's leatherman, led torch, pen and two 2GB usb sticks. Very seldom need anything else but the leatherman gets a lot of use, especially in the medical room

Usually involves work during the holidays where you can be all over site - eg working at one end of school, then called away because a delivery is here or an electrician has arrived - and then after that distraction going and doing something else... b*gger, where did I leave the screwdrivers?!

In my schoolbag.. 12" Powerbook G4 Mini DVI - VGA adapter (for the powerbook) Palm Zire PDA (very nice for the lights at school as they're switchless ) 30gb White Zune 3.5mm to RCA wire for zune with phono to 3.5mm for connecting to speaker ports in classrooms 2gb Kingston o2 Phone (w810i) and everything else required for sixth form.
eddyc Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Just classroom door keys mainly - we have a small server room (broom cupboard) in the three main buildings with gear in so keep a limited toolbox in each! If its a major job then its back to the office to get the right tool for the job! Ed
Kingstech Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 When i am out and about i carry keys with a GMK on it to get everywhere and my new windows 8.1 tablet connected to the domain plus a couple of memory sticks, one attached to my keys and normally one attached to my ID badge. Then it does depend on what the job im doing is. Mostly i will carry a toolbox around with all sorts of tools in it. Including Patch cables, hammer, screwdrivers, punch down tool and Crimping tool, RJ45 ends. Plus lots of random tools. Its starting to get heavy now.
rich_tech Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 On our site here these days, I carry, Mobile Phone 8gb USB stick (lent a family friend the 16gb one I had and only just got it back) Multitool that my wife bought me for christmas If I have to get anything specific I usually go back to office/server room to get it and install it today, failing that I remove the base units back to our server room to work on if needed

Had to buy a Toyota Avensis (the stealth taxi) to get it all in. 2 plastic bins of kit and tools + 2 bags of cables etc, toolbox and small rucksack with my lovely HP probook 4340s. Loads of cables, 6 way mains leads, external USB DVD drive, esata/USB3 SSD, PSU's, adapters of all denominations and really useful a non contact voltage detector and LED torch combined. At home I have (ebay specials) 3COM 48 port gigabit switches , NAS, old Intel server, good spec. desktop PC, UPS, fibre connectors and MAC's, AP's, in fact everything needed to get a school working again if disaster should strike. I probably have far too much kit, but then I wouldn't be a geek otherwise would I....?

Garacesh Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I'm only on one site now, so it's just: - Keys (and keyfob) - Phone (I'm sure there's a song about this somewhere ) Toolkit under my desk contains any tool I might need, I just pull them out as-and-when. If I get to a room and need other equipment I just head to the comms room and pick it up.

If i need to fix a machine whilst im about ill either run back to the office to grab a screwdriver or ill take the machine back with me, running joke in the office is that taking the machine for a 'walk' from the classroom to the office fixes it! Happens about 2/3 of the time!
