[fog] Lovely FOG wont see our new Dell Vos 220 HDs

Hello!

 

Our Ghost server is down (wont go into details) and im getting bored of waiting for it to be fixed (not allowed to do it myself) so I thought id give FOG a bash. Managed to get it installed. Worked absolutely brilliantly for a Dell mini 10 that we have, so I thought id give it a go on our Vostro 220s.

 

I cant seem to pull the image off though, tells me its a fatal error and it cant find the hard drive. The drive was set to ATA mode, then tried ACHI, still the same. The only other option I have is RAID.

 

Anything else I can do. I tried googling and searching, and i hope i didnt fail epically on that!

How many partitions are in your image?

Just the one. The machines came with vista, but we wiped them and installed XP.

A Buggy ACPI implementation by your bios may also be at fault. Try doing an update or also try using 'acpi=off irqpoll' as boot parameters.

Ive checked the BIOS, its the latest one available sadly.

So go to your machine definition in the FOG console and there is an option to add kernel parameters.

Try 'acpi=off irqpoll'

Hmm the only info I can find on this is on the FOG forum someone reporting that they had to use a different kernel to image this machine.

 

Unfortunately they don't say which one.

I'd imagine it's the kitchensink one. To check it's a kernel issue, follow this wiki article.

Ok, so ive tried the fdisk -l command, but it just sits there, so im guessing it wont work.

 

It says I can update the kernal from the WebUI > Other Information > Kernel Updates > but the area, but that area just seems to be empty. I have an active net connection and its all working.

Are you behind a proxy? If so, you will have to download and install the kernel update manually.

Download the latest 'kitchen sink' kernel

 

Download FOG - A Free Cloning Solution from SourceForge.net

 

extract it to /tftpboot/fog/kernel/

 

then in the web interface alter the kernel for the machine(s) in question to point to the new kernel image

Just type in the kernel name, FOG looks in /tftpboot/fog/kernel/ for the kernel you specify.

Okay, im possibly being a numpty, ive placed the kernel file into the folder you said, updated it in the FOG console but it says it cant find the kernel.

I believe you need to specify the full path to the kernel file relative to the TFTP root in the machines profile in the FOG console. So the 'Host Kernel' section would look like:

 

fog/kernel/Kernel-2.6.29.2.kitchensink

 

Alternatively you might want to replace the default 'bzImage' file with your new kernel. Simply backup the bzImage file and rename your 'kitchensink' kernel to bzImage.

I just tired the rename of the bzImage funnily enough, but I still get a fatal error about the HDD not being found.

 

Ive also tried specifying /dev/sda, but that doesnt seem to have helped either

Ah yes I was wrong, however its interesting to note reports on the forum that is you just specify the kernel name you get an error like "/tftpboot/fog/kernels/XX (cannot find XX Kernel)

What mode is the HD running under, SATA? IDE?

Do you have an option in BIOS to run SATA in compatibility/IDE emulation or anything like that? (seen this called a few different things in different BIOS)

The only options i have are ACHI, RAID and ATA. Ive tried all bar RAID, but to no avail.

Just as a followup to this thread - we've been having problems imaging machines and getting:

Buffer I/O error on device sda,

etc.

 

appending irqpoll to the kernel parameters fixed this problem
