I've been tasked to find a system for printing our own staff ID cards and need a system where they can be printed 'on the hoof' for visitors etc. I've been looking at these but would like to know if anyone has a better system with decent software for capturing photos and putting them into a template. The job of printing them will most likely be given to the reception staff so it needs to be fairly easy to use. Cheers HBJB
localzuk Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 We print our own here, we have a Magicard system too - with IDPro7 from Payne Security. We use a Paxton door access system though, so don't print them on the fly. Instead we have a bunch we have printed already with 'VISITOR' on, which have permission to go through a subset of our doors. However... There are solutions out there which allow you to have 'reprintable' cards, (but not paxton cards). I would give you more details, but I seem to have thrown the catalogue away.

tech_guy Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I was going to say don't go for the Magicard system - we have one and have had loads of trouble with it (belts stretching, tape snapping, etc).

srochford Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 We used Magicard at my last place and the printers worked well (we'd typically print > 20,000 cards per year on 3-4 printers)
localzuk Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 If you've got things like belts stretching and tape snapping, then that makes me think you're overusing the machine (ie. you bought too small of a machine for the job). Personally, we've had no issues at all with our Magicolor machine, but that is down to the fact we produce maybe 100 cards a year on it.

binky Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Talk to the people at Banner Bridge, used them before and they are excellent. We use a fargo system with preprinted cards (i.e. the cards already have the graphics and we print on the details)

MatthewL Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 We use IDPro7 although we only did ours for a short while due to our trust renaming but the trust that does them for us know uses the same as far as I am aware. We have Datacard printers in our office to print them if we want to.

Zer0kbps Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 We have been using them for a very long time, I personally hate them with a passion, but they do the job,it's just over the years they get smaller but the problems never disappear, like others have said, ribbons break so have sello-tape to hand. The bit the vexes me so much is the amount they waste on the ribbon, when u install a fresh ribbon it skips the first two sets of cells, and then it's the drivers, they are ok but they could be better. Tbh i think they are the best of a bad situation, a lot of the edu sector seem to use them, my advise is to get cards pre-printed with all static stuff and simply print off the dynamic bits, this cuts the print time downs. If you can live with it try black only printing, quailty could be better, but by god it's fast and cheap because of the way the colour works.
PEO Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 we have magicard printer with idpro7, personally I like it alot had a litle problem with it last week and required taking it apart while talking to the engineer on the phone, and between us we managed to solve the problem which makes a change. I recommend magicard just on the quality level of support you get. and the warranty is spot on too

Heebeejeebee Posted August 26, 2009 Author Posted August 26, 2009 Well, we went ahead and bought the printer (forget the exact model but it prints the hologram overlay), 300 cards with the hologram in the corner, 200 lanyards and holders, the software, a couple of spare ribbons and it cost in the region of £1,700. I haven't used it in anger yet so can't comment on its suitability yet. HBJB
