Michael Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I'm beginning to think Policy Central is becoming more hassle than it's actually worth. Not once have Link2ICT suggested Policy Central may be causing problems, again. I'm all for additional tools for monitoring pupil behaviour, but when it interferes with online learning over a long period it's simply unacceptable really.

Seems PCE related, no update it seems on the Console either. See if its still the same if so then its not an add on and if its fine then it may be an add on or ie ( try a full repair / restore on ie 7 that or un install and use ie fix ( requires OS disc at same SP level as OS on the computer ) then re install ie 7
Michael Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 C:\WINDOWS\system32\PCENT is definitely where Policy Central is installed. I don't recall there being a file called c32cs2.exe and it may or may not be a false positive.

Found original C32cs2.exe file in Policy Central file "client.cab" version 3.0.0.0 on the PCE server client updates folder. Submitted to Virus Total with mixed results. File C32cs2.exe received on 2009.07.10 18:02:56 (UTC) Current status: Loading ... queued waiting scanning finished NOT FOUND STOPPED Result: 11/41 (26.83%) With it being mostly flagged as "BehavesLike:Trojan.TaskDisabler"

alan-d Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Ours updated automatically. We did have an issue with some machines reporting that they had updated to 3.0.0.8 via PCE but in fact were still on an old version. Forensic software fixed it remotely. So far all is well

On the same workstation on Monday, IE7 with the latest June security fixes was already running, but I also installed FF 3.5 and there is a massive difference in browsing speed. BBC.co.uk and Sky.com took about 10 seconds to fully load, but with FF it took about 2 seconds and this was at the same time... The problem is I am reluctant to deploy FF 3.5 as there's no straight forward way to specify homepage, proxy settings etc with GPOs and no automated way of patching either. IE is much better to manage in my view.

Michael Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Well one test I'd like to do come September is to take a laptop and a desktop with IE7 or IE8, FF 3.5 and Policy Central v3.0.0.8 installed and try it from home as this takes the school proxies out of the equation. The reason I want to try this, is because at home I run IE8 and FF 3.5 and the speed is pretty much the same with both browsers at the same time.

Ours is also internal, we had problems updating to 3.0.0.7 but Forensics applied a fix for it to update. I figured this would sort it for the long term, but maybe it doesn't.
Guest TheLibrarian Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 We've updated our PCE install to 3.0.0.8 today. There's only a few clients out on our Grey Mile with 3.0.0.8, mostly the rest are 3.0.0.7. We found problems with 3.0.0.7 causing IE8 to show the diagnose connection button occasionally and kill downloads nearly every time. As for 3.0.0.8 it's too early to tell if it's going to cause us issues yet.
Michael Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Does it work in Google Chrome? Policy Central works in the background as a service, so it constantly scans whichever application(s) you're using. Google Chrome (as far as I know) remains unaffected compatibility wise with Policy Central. It's Internet Explorer 7 and 8 that appear to have problems with Policy Central in this case.

Guest TheLibrarian Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 I've had problems with IE8, I currently SUSPECT they are related to PCE 3.0.0.8. IE8 has locked up when posting to forums, uploading attachments to forums while PCE has been active. After killing PCE IE8 worked fine, there have only been two instances of IE dying with PCE loaded so far: once today, once yesterday. After IE8 locked I killed PCE because I'm not chasing PCE IE8 problems, but I guess I will be sooner rather than later.
