Well they have lot the rights so how long till it closes. To be honest I hope it does as good chance espn will then go over to a sky package.

They will go elsewhere. Theres been a lot written about it in the scottish press..

 

Its Scottish football it will affect the most.

 

About 4 of the SPL clubs rely on the income from Setanta as 20% of their income. The money in Scottish football pales into insignificance compared to the money in England.

Sky apparently can bid for sentantas rights not sure of ins and outs.

 

Apparently epsn have wanted to move their channel away Sentanta for a while but locked into a contract.

Sky aren't allowed to own all packages, which I think is silly so long as there's good competition in the bidding process. It's probably costing viewers more money to have Setanta and Sky now, so I don't see what being anti-competitive has to do with anything! Customers were getting a better deal in the first place.

 

I believe Setanta owe the taxman quite a lot, and not just the Premier League. A lot of other companies could have financial problems as a result (if they're owed money too). It's not looking bright for Setanta. I was surprised also when a £20M bid for 51% was put forward to Setanta. Seems quite a small amount bearing in mind they owe at least £35M.

Yes one of the two on offer you're right. And knowing Sky they probably will buy the better of the two. Question remains however, other than EPSN who else would bid for the remaining package? They could offer a stupid amount and no one could do anything (even Sky).

According to linkedin has 500 staff of course I don't want staff to lose jobs that is obviously but on personnel level can see closure of the company being beneficial to lot of the customers.

Or did you mean personal level, in which case yeah i'm sure the setanta customers your speaking on behalf of would love to see the service cut or alternatively to see only part of what they currently pay for to be bought up by setanta's UK competitors. Setanta broadcast much more besides premier$h1t football and spl you know. I don't know how seamless a transition it would be for competitors to buy out these packages if acceptable to the sporting orgs selling them.

i thought they'd spunked all their [sorry, our] money on F1. Plus don't they already pay a fair wedge for MOTD highlights. Doesn't look good if they can pull out the stops to buy 21 premier league games AND premier league highlights but not a single ball of international cricket.

Most sentanta customers I would like to make educated guess have sky sports. Sentanta going bust would release a large amount of sports rights (not just football) that would get picked up by not just Sky but Eurosport, BBC & ITV. Which means that they would better off as they would be seeing the sports still but paying less..

 

Only situation where would not be beneficial would be for a customer does not have Sky but has Setanta but as said think that would be a very low %.

This is where it gets very interesting if espn got a set of rights...

 

Option one - Setanta goees bust

 

ESPN America goes to a Sky package - and if they have football rights suspect would be renamed just to espn.

 

Option two - Setanta carrys on

 

ESPN would again I suspect be renamed to espn but then would remain on Setanta and you would need to pay Setanta to access the channel and so access the football. Then as soon as contract up with Setanta then espn would move over to a sky package.

 

Option 3 - Rent

 

They rent space on another channel but not sure the legal side of that.

Frankly the Euro anti-monopoly legislation which prevents Sky from obtaining all the packages is loony in this one, stand alone case.

 

Sky wouldn't put up the monthly subscription for Sports if they got all the packages.

 

They wouldn't run another season of "Premiership Plus", as the take up was very low.

 

In this instance it is actually better for the consumer for one company to take the monopoly, and save them £10 for another premium service, of which they'd only watch the football!

When I was here last, it was ESPN that showed all the scottish games..

They have gone into administration. Check out the message on their site. I still feel sorry for people losing their jobs, even though I agree with comments above that having two companies showing the football actually costs more than if it were just Sky.

When i called setanta to see if i could subscribe for a month they wanted £27 for the first month and then £12.95 or similar for the following months. So it would have cost me £40 for the month to watch 1 game. Setanta didnt have enough good games on and having paid stupid money for sky sports and movies i dont see the point in paying extra for more sport.
