(Sorry, if I put this thread in the wrong place) I am thinking of implementing WSS and have a question regarding what would happen to my existing file servers when WSS is fully implemented. When I move to use WSS, will I still need to use my exsisting file servers? Please could you folks give me some advice. Cheers.

localzuk Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 WSS is a portal server. It has some document management stuff built into it, amongst many other things. It is not a replacement for a file server, especially not in a school environment. It is good for sharing files in a 'public area' kind of way - things like policies and the like slot in perfectly in a school.
SeniorFeet Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Some people I know have implemented it as a replacement for a file server but I wouldn't really recommend it, yes you can map their home folders to their My Site personal folders so it is achievable, however, if your users are light users, and by light I mean their home folder contains a few word/excel files etc then yes it's a viable solution, but as soon as they start storing videos, mp3s and 100's of MB worth of files then your MOSS server is gonna take a battering. Keep them seperate, that'd be my recommendation.

Do you mean you want to access a document library in WSS in a 'Mapped Drive' way, or do you mean you want to access a drive from within sharepoint? If the prior, it should be as simple as adding a network place, via My Network Places. The latter, I don't think so - MOSS 2007 allows for you to add a network drive to the search index, but WSS does not. If you want to be able to use WSS with this sort of thing, you will want to add Microsoft Enterprise Search Express. 1

Academia Ltd have it under the Open license for £920 per server (these are catalogue prices), and Phoenix Software have it at £528 per server under Select agreement (remember to add CALs, which with select are £12 each). So, those are some rough figures.
