I have a user who's machine is taking 3 or 4 minutes to open a document. It isn't limited to one particular doc, it happens with all (including new).

Has anyone had this problem before?.

Check the anti-virus hasn't suddenly started checking everything you touch!

Could be a damaged Word installation - worth a repair, I would have thought.

Or..found this as reasons for docs opening slowly:

corrupt normal.dot

corrupt printer driver

missing base template

full temp folder --seems quite likely to me

bad third party add-in

Hope this helps!!

Yes have had that here when the computer cannot find the distribution point where it was installed from.

Log on as administrator and ring word. It will ask you where the distribution point is enter the current location and bobs your uncle .

What do you mean 'ring word'. How do you do that?

I was going to say that printer drivers or more accurately printers being offline (especially the default) can cause all manner of problems...

Worth checking out...

Yep, I had this with a Powerpoint file. Is it image heavy? The last time a student came to me with an office document that took ages to open (over 10mins!) I checked the file size.

1Gb worth of images crammed on to one slide.

The only fix was to export the entire slide as a JPEG image as it merges all the images into one, smaller image. In the case of a Word document, try printing it as a PDF file if no further changes will be made to it. Might make it smaller. Also take any images out and resize them as students forget a 10MB image is still 10MB even if you shrink it down in Word.

The problem I have apears to be with the school letter head every document created before the letter head was modified about a year ago will not open or takes a long time to open. If I open the document with open office go to properties and untick apply user data and save as .doc file it opens straight away? deleted user profiles and no difference. any ideas
