Debian unsupported platform / dns resetting

I've got Debian 5.0 installed on a server. In gnome when i go on the network option in the menu when it opens i get a unsupported platform message and it allows me to choose which distro im using. If i pick Debian 5.0 (Lenny) it opens fine and allows me to change the network settings nicely so any ideas about this?

 

And also every time it gets shutdown the dns servers seems to get emptied so theres nothing in /etc/resolv.conf or in the dns section of the network applet.

 

This started happening since i apt-get dist-upgraded from Debian 4.

 

I'd reinstall but the server doesnt have a cd drive(i dont have a scsi cd drive ), cant boot from network and cant boot from usb.

Are you expecting them to be filled from DHCP, or be static?

Static.

The network settings in /etc/network/interfaces stays upon shutdown just not the dns servers.

Check you don't have the resolvconf package installed. IIRC it will overwrite your /etc/resolv.conf with a header, body and tail that it generates from time to time.

I don't use the gnome networking tools, so no bright ideas. You could try using dpkg-reconfigure gnome-network-admin, or possibly apt-get reinstall it.
