Is it more efficient to have 1 share that has 10 subdirectories

or share each subdirectory out individually

Would suggest you won't see much difference - except in administration overhead for 10 shares!

There were issues with earlier versions of Windows when you had lots (>1000 I think) shares but those have now gone.

 

From a management point of view one share is easier but clients may make a difference. Windows clients can easily connect to \\server\share\folder so if you have only got Windows clients then I'd go with that. If you've got Linux or Mac clients they're much less good at this so you really need lots of separate shares.

Especially for students, having multiple shares prevents them seeing things they shouldn't see - if they can't see them, they can't be tempted by them.

I have one share with sub folders

 

For example the share would be called "home areas" with the home areas inside. Its more tidy that way

I'd second that. Security is easier to manage with separate shares.

Plus when you create a user account it will only create a home area automatically if it is a sub folder of a share

Personally, I prefer one share for home directories and one for profiles, but my boss prefers multiple shares. A lot of it is preference: I like the neatness, automatic management and inheriting permissions.

I only have 7 unique Shares. Even though the kids get more than one, they are hidden.

 

My Shares are :

Programs (Program Data) - Hidden from Everyone

Environment (Profiles, Start Menus and Redirected Desktops) - Hidden From Everyone

PupilShare

StaffShare (Not mapped on the Kids accounts)

SIMS (Staff Only)

School Fund - Only a Share because it wouldn't work as a subfolder!

Documents - Two Subfolders, 1 Staff, 1 Students, Each has their own directory within it which is mapped to H:\ on login.

 

I can't see why you would need many more? - After the Share use NTFS permissions to assign rights to certain groups for Subfolders (like OfficeDocs)
