SMTP Server host needed - suggestions ?

Right my exchange woes continue.

 

Have finally got my exchange box to receive emails(thanks to Webman), but alas it wont send.

 

Now i beleive that exchange needs to point at a valid smtp gateway/ip ???

 

Just found out that the company the Head registered the domain with (123-reg) do not have smtp servers for outgoing email. He regged with these on the reccomendation of our LEA education dept GGGRRRRRRRR

 

So any suggestions on who to use for smpt? or is it easies to just movee the regged domain to another hosting site ?

Can't your RBC help you at all? Ours will manage other domains other than the sch.uk. They then take care of hosing, MX records etc.

Exchange has its own SMTP server. Assuming you have a working DNS and your firewall is set to allow SMTP traffic out, you don't need a seperate SMTP host.

You RBC should help you in this and provide you with a smarthost to relay the mail to. You can also do it directly by the DNS method. This requires that whoever manages you domain to setup a mx record setup for you domain.

 

They would create a mx record which would point to an A record which in turns points to your mail server's public ip address.

 

You might want to chase up your RBC and use the smarthost just incase your normal server (DNS) method gets blacklisted, where as your RBC's host will not be blacklisted and even if they are they will be corrected quickly.

I dont mind my exchange box managing the smtp traffic itself but it just wont work ??

 

All the sent emails get stuck queuing forever.

 

I work for the local Council and they can't offer me any smtp/smarthost facility, allthough i will ask them again.

 

I Should of gone on a course first

It sounds to me that your Exchange and DNS servers are having difficulty resolving domain names.

 

Run NSLOOKUP, make sure it is set to talk to your internal DNS server (type in "server " if it isn't) and see if you can resolve some websites, e.g. Google, edugeek, etc

 

Can you give a few more details on your setup? Is the Exchange server sitting directly on the internet? Is it going through a proxy server?

Scrub last message its now working.

 

Picked a different RBC DNS server and its now working.
