Email on the move - Mobile devices

We have a very large site, and various wireless access points. I am looking for a way of receiving email from our on-site Exchange 2007 server, so that i don't have to go all the way back to my pc, to find that i am needed two classrooms away from the place i have just been to.

 

School probably won't stump up for a contract phone, so are there any Smartphones or PDA's that sync via wireless to exchange?

 

I am very niave with mobile phone developments. How do you keep in contact with email whilst your doing your rounds on site?

HTC's are very good smartphones for exchange etc :-) so i recommend them.

 

HTC - Touch Phone, PDA Phone, Smartphone, Mobile Computer

 

dont go and get anything like the o2 branded stuff as (might just be me) i can never seem to get them to work properly.

 

They tend to act like a pager, aslong as it has a connection to your exchange, when you get a new email it will just alert you.

 

I am thinking of doing the same for us.

I've got a HTC touch diamond. So long as you turn off the unstable HTC software and just use it as a Windows Mobile device, it is great.

 

Bear in mind that if you use wifi for any period of time on any portable device, you'll chew through battery power. I just use normal mobile data (GPRS/3G) which downloads the first 1kb of each email. Doesn't run up massive bills for me, but saves a load of time in checking email.

I use an iPod touch to sync with an exchange server. Relatively cheap too, compared with a contract phone (8GB iPod c.£150). It also synchronises my calendar and contacts.

We use Blackberry. They integrate into our exchange into our exchange and users get e-mail etc on the go

iphone/ipod touch works fine using activesync over wireless. If you have push active, it will automatically alert you to new messages.

Actually had a comment from a deputy head the other day that we should be given blackberrys or similar! May have to see what my manager thinks of the idea

Blackberry's belong in pies.

They do not integrate, you either have to shell out on a BES or faff around with pop3 and imap and everyone wants them to do what an iPhone or a Smartphone will do without thinking!

 

When we started to use them I had a handful using the Blackberry Web service connecting to owa, then it got out of control until the club reached 30 BB's!!!

I hate them, with so much venom I cannot begin to put it into words.

 

The BES has sorted out a lot of the issues but it was not a cheap solution especially when I can do the WM6 devices and iPhones for free!

 

I have never had a single day's trouble with my HTC and Exchange server yet I do not think that a day goes past without one of the gormless BB users wanting to do something stupid!

I have one user on a Nokia E series, again no problems.

 

If I had my way I would liquidise all BB's and push the BES off a cliff:censored:

 

At one clients after a whole year of BB aggro they switched to iPhones, not a single helpdesk call since.

 

Now if anyone hands me a BB I simply drop it by accident!

iPhones are useless with exchange since they new firmware update.

 

Get a cheap wifi windows mobile PDA if you only need wifi

Another vote for HTCs and Exchange Push Mail, works a treat, will do it over Wifi then if Wifi is out of range over the sim card access instead

I'm on Orange, and the data packages with them suck. 30MB a month is something like £8. And then after that there is a cap of £1 a day for data charges.

 

Every other company has much better plans than this - and when my contract is up, I'll be discussing that with them... (Considering I've spent £2k on my contract(s) in 2 years).
