plexer Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Has anyone else had issues with ActivStudio2 PE on laptops? we've got several Ensis-S machines and this runs like a dog on them. Installing ActivStudio 1 and the software runs normally again. Last time I checked there was nothing mentioned on the promethean site about this. Has anyone else seen/received an ActivWand? looks like something out of Harry Potter but several people found it easier to use than a pen plus the end of it is a lot more robust than a pens nib. Ben

Ben Was any prompting required for that? Or did they just send you one? We have exclusively Promethean (well... apart from one "Clever" board that we got cheap) but they haven't sent me one Andy

drjturner Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Ben We have found that some of the Antivirus software on workstation/servers read one file in a very weird and slow way. The file in question is the settings.ini. We are hoping to have a new release out in the next 2-3 weeks that will actually copy this file to the local temp folder first before reading it, and copying it back once the program closes. It has seemed to speed things up quite a lot.

The letter just says "your complimentary activwand" thank you for choosing activboard systems for the recent installation in yuor school. This was an order/installation of 10 boards. Extra wands are £40 each orders can be faxed to 0870 165 2210 Ben

Andy Andy It does help sometimes but on the one on the server, you have to specify each individual settings.ini, with a school with a lot of teachers this can be a mammoth task. I suppose the extension.ini could be in the exclusion list but some schools / leas do not like that. Witch I will get back to you on this query.
drjturner Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Hi I have found out what the deal is with the wands. Customers were selected at random by our Marketing Department and Ben was one of the lucky few. The Wand is available through our sales office at £40 + vat.
drjturner Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 An update on this, Customers who ordered systems in the summer term (i.e. post Easter hols ) are getting a complimentary Wand (one per school not per system) mailed to them after installation. I found out 2 depts were sending them out so if you have bought a system post easter you will receive a wand.
plexer Posted July 6, 2006 Author Posted July 6, 2006 Dan coming back to the fix for the slowness will that fix it being slow while using activstudio it's not just slow to start up as you use the pen on the board writing and clicking on activstudio menu options is slow as well. Ben

I bought 3 boards from you before Easter but I always install myself as it works out much cheaper for us to DIY it as we have the staff, training, insurance etc to DIY it. It would be great if we were to get one as it may be the answer to some of our Pen Issues....

I've discovered that if you are using roaming profiles, that ActiveStudio PE comunicates with that directory alot.... let me explain a touch more.... I have alot of laptops with AS PE2 installed [deployed via GP using a admin point - works a treat.... minus the driver manual configure] and previously, I had those staff using roaming profiles.... Now, i discovered that [apart from those people not being able to use the laptop off of the network - roaming profiles are a no go for off-network users btw] that the ones that were furthest away [in the physical networking sense] from the DC / Fileserver, were getting terrible trouble with AS PE2 being incredibly slow. The network is particularly slow in that area anyhow - being at the end of the network - but AS just wouldnt respond. After turning off roaming profiles for that user, moving any work off the laptop, deleting the local copy of the user profile, and logging back in as that user... when starting AS PE2 & allowing the profile / settings of the program to point to the local My Docs etc - AS PE2 worked full speed ahead. So i had no need to look at the A/V and such. Hope that may help some people with some speed problems they cant work out. Cheers Nath
