A few years ago i would have said stay away from Maxtor. But when Seagate look over the quality of product it much better

Get a PCI card that has a few eSATA connections and then just get a hard drive caddy that has esata and should be a lot faster then firewire or usb.

 

Then you can purchase any 3.5 sata hard drive

 

I normally get my stuff from Aria PC - Computer Hardware, Components, Monitors.. at lowest prices pretty good prices etc

I have to agreewith mac_shinobi, eSATA is so superior to USB in speed that if your are transfering any large bits of data that you really want to consider it. Often if you have a modern motherboard on the system that you are connecting it to most you can get headers that go from a normal SATA port on your motherboard to an external eSATA plug. This will give you native drive speed as if the drive is actually installed in the computer itself. Most eSATA cases also come with USB as well so that you can use the slower and more dodgey USB when eSATA is not avalible.

Too many recommendations for Maxtor kit - they're dreadful.

 

If it's definitely USB only, the Mybooks are a good bet IMO.

Yeah was meant to mention about using just a eSATA bracket but obviously as you have already mentioned that makes the use of available sata ports on the motherboard ( assuming there are any free ) and as said already you can still get a PCI card with eSATA ports if there arent any sata ports or if there arent any free.

 

Just thought it would be faster and better connection then using firewire or usb but good idea to get an enclosure that has usb on it just in case as you mention above.

I agree eSATA is going to be better than USB 2.0, but not all motherboards have eSATA connections.

 

Another alternative would be a NAS with Gigabit Ethernet. This will give similar peformance to eSATA and many more machines come with dual Ethernet adapters. I suppose another idea would be an external RAID box configured in RAID 0 (striped) would really use eSATA or Gigabit Ethernet, but for under £100 no chance.

For ultimate redundancy and performance, does anyone know if an E-SATA external with RAID caddy exists?

 

I need to get some storage but am struggling whether i go for performance with a external drive with esata or have the flexibility of NAS so I can access music, photos from any laptop, PDA or PC around the house.

 

Any suggestions? I slowly going for NAS because of the flexibility. Anyone recently purchased the Netgear XRAID readynas with free 500gb drive? I am looking at this at the moment, it seems a good deal

Given the choice I would go with a NAS over eSATA. Just plug it into your switch/router, format the drive as appropriate, create a folder structure then create shares.

 

You could then (in theory) access your data centrally and wirelessly if you have a wireless router of course! As for the Netgear XRAID I don't know, I've never seen/used one. You'll find that creating your own NAS is usually cheaper and of course fully configurable to how you want to set it up.
